Do you have to pull out the root of the tooth?

April 23, 2023
Some people have broken tooth roots for various reasons, which affect normal tooth function. So should a tooth root that is broken in the bone be removed?

Scenarios of broken tooth roots

There are two main situations when a tooth root breaks in the bone: the first is when the crown of a normal tooth is completely decayed, leaving only the root still buried in the bone; the second is when the root breaks during the extraction process by the doctor, resulting in a part of the tip of the tooth being missed. These two cases are handled in different ways.

Do the roots have to be extracted?

In general, the root of the tooth should be extracted. Roots that remain in the bone may cause difficulty in healing the extraction wound, cause apical inflammation and pain, and even lead to fistulas and overflowing pus. Therefore, the remaining roots should be extracted if possible.

Situations where root extraction is not necessary

If the residual root tip is very short and there is no obvious pathology, and there is a risk of damaging the surrounding important nerves or structures by continuing to pull out the broken root, then it may be considered not to extract it and just keep an eye on it.

Can a tooth be extracted if it is inflamed?

If a broken root causes inflammation of the affected tooth, the root causing the inflammation should be extracted promptly. If it is a complex complication and extraction may cause more trauma, then it is important to control the inflammation before considering extraction. The specific treatment plan needs to be followed by medical advice.
