Can tooth extraction slim your face?

April 23, 2023
There is a popular saying on the internet that removing wisdom teeth can change the shape of the face and make it look smaller. So is this true? Can tooth extraction slim my face?

Can tooth extraction slim down your face?

Tooth extraction does not slim down the face. The contour of the jaw angle is determined by the jawbone and the muscles attached to it, and removing wisdom teeth does not make the face smaller. The perceived face slimming effect is probably due to the swelling of the muscles at the extraction site before and after the tooth extraction, and the swelling goes down after the incision returns to normal.

Removal of cuspid teeth can cause changes in face shape

If a cuspid is removed, which is often referred to as a tiger tooth, it can indeed cause the upper lip to collapse and look like the shape of the face has changed. Therefore, if the cusp teeth are removed for some reason, it is important to have a timely oral restoration, i.e., dentures, to properly restore the function on the one hand, and to restore the normal face shape on the other.

Removal of cuspids requires timely restoration

After the extraction of teeth, the original complete tooth row will produce a gap, and the efficiency of human chewing will be greatly reduced. In addition, if this gap is not repaired, over time, the teeth on either side of the tooth may be tilted, and the teeth that were originally occluded opposite the top and bottom of the missing tooth will be overly elongated. Therefore, effective restoration of missing teeth is a must.

How to restore a tooth after extraction

Depending on the condition of the person with missing teeth, restorative methods such as movable dentures, fixed bridges, and dental implants are available. Of course, if the extracted tooth is a wisdom tooth, a denture restoration is usually not necessary.
