How to stop bleeding from a small wound

April 20, 2023
Life is inevitable bumps and bruises, scrapes or scratches by sharp objects, these small wounds also need to pay attention to, otherwise it is not only difficult to heal the wound, but also easy to cause infection, leading to bad results. Small wounds bleeding more than how to do?

Dealing with small wounds essential products

Sterilized, breathable cotton pads, gauze, these dressings can promote wound healing, reduce pain, decomposition of necrotic tissue, absorb excess exudate; in addition to this, you also need band-aids, iodine, alcohol.

Clean the wound

The wound should first be rinsed under clean, running cold water and the skin around the wound scrubbed with a clean cloth dipped in soap. Be careful not to get the soapy water into the wound or it will sting. Then clean the wound with gauze or tweezers to remove any dirt from the wound.

Stopping the bleeding

Don't think of bleeding as a bad thing; a small amount of bleeding can help clean the wound. Smaller wounds will quickly stop bleeding on their own. If you want to stop bleeding quickly, it is best to use a clean cloth attached to a harder object to compress the wound. If the wound is on an extremity, elevating the injured area so that it is relatively higher than the heart may also reduce bleeding.

Use bandage dressing

A bandage can be applied to cover a wound that is not closed. If the wound is easily soiled or rubbed, cover the wound with sterile or clean gauze and then dress it with a medical bandage and adhesive tape. But remember to change the gauze every day and keep it dry and clean, and go to the hospital immediately when redness, swelling and pain occur.

Handling blood scabs

Wound scabs can prevent contamination by dirty things, try not to forcibly pick down the blood scabs, they will automatically peel off when the wound heals.

Seek medical help

Seek medical attention when: dirt cannot be removed from the wound; the wound is irregular and the edges are split and cannot be easily dressed; the wound is deep; the blood is sprayed; the bleeding does not stop after more than 10 minutes of pressure with a hard object; the edges cannot be recovered and require stitches; the area around the wound is numb and unconscious; the wound changes color, becomes soft and shows signs of redness and inflammation; tetanus antitoxin needs to be injected, etc.

Preventing Wound Infection

The key to dealing with wounds is to prevent infection. The correct wound treatment method can prevent and control wound contamination and accelerate healing, and the wound should be cleaned as soon as possible after injury, rinsed with plenty of clean water, not scrubbed, thoroughly clean the skin around the wound, use sterile gauze to dress the wound, and change the gauze every day to check whether the wound is infected.
