what is the cause of yawning so much

April 11, 2023
Why do people yawn? It seems to be a simple physiological phenomenon, however, there is not a definitive explanation in medical biology because it is not a disease and does not affect life, the specific reasons may be related to the following theories.

Physiological instinct

From the fetal period, human beings begin to yawn in the mother's womb. A yawn lasts for about 6 seconds, which is a short period of time that allows a person to close his or her eyes and stop listening, to completely relax the nerves and muscles of the whole body, and to get the best rest both physiologically and psychologically, which has an important physiological protective effect on the human body.

Brain hypoxia

Some scientists believe that yawning is a manifestation of cerebral hypoxia, and the human body inhales a large amount of air through the deep breathing exercise of yawning, which increases oxygen in the blood and discharges more carbon dioxide, thus making people more energetic. Whether this theory is correct or not is also unknown.

Fatigue

The human body tends to yawn when it is tired and sleepy to remind the body that the brain and organs are fatigued and need to sleep and rest. Yawning in the morning, on the other hand, can promote the change of various functional areas of the cerebral cortex from an inhibited state to an excited state in order to allow the cerebral cortex to carry out its normal work.

Lower brain temperature

American scientists have also shown through experiments that yawning is designed to help cool the brain. Because, yawning when inhaling cold air, helps to reduce the temperature of the facial blood, which in turn cools the brain. And the human body in fatigue, the brain temperature will rise, when the need to yawn to cool the brain to maintain brain health and wakefulness.

Yawning benefits

Yawning is an instinctive reaction of the body, just like normal heartbeat and breathing, which is not controlled by the will; it has good protective effects on protecting brain cells, increasing oxygen supply and improving the body's stress capacity. It can replenish oxygen, relax tension, eliminate fatigue, relax muscles, etc. Yawning when the plane lands can help balance the pressure in the middle ear. In addition, people who face the computer for a long time, yawning is also good for eye care.

Yawning is contagious

Experiments have shown that about 40-60% of adults, when others yawn, will be infected and follow the yawn. The closer you are to someone, the more likely you are to catch a yawn; this phenomenon is called empathy. While empathy is a primal instinct that we humans harbor, yawn contagion may be a means of sharing feelings that promotes close relationships among people, helps relieve tension and stress, and transmits the instinct for peaceful emotions.
