WCan sunscreen cause infertility

April 9, 2023
According to the Daily Mail, research has found that the sunscreens we often apply contain benzophenone chemicals that can reduce male sperm quality and cut fertility by 30% after long-term use.

Benzophenones in sunscreen can reduce male fertility

A new study recently found that the benzophenone chemical used in sunscreen to fight UV rays can reduce male fertility, also known as BP-2 or 4OH-BP, which is also commonly used in sunscreen shampoos or other sunscreen products.

Benzophenone can reduce male fertility Mechanism of action

When absorbed into the skin, benzophenone affects male hormones and the endocrine system, reducing their fertility rate by 30%. Interestingly, however, the effect is only on men, and the damage to women is almost negligible.

Sunscreen experimental study subjects

The study focused on the impact of people's lifestyle factors and chemical environment on their fertility. A total of 501 couples participated in the study while it was conducted. The women were between the ages of 18 and 44, while the men were all over the age of 18, and none had infertility.

Sunscreen trial study results

The study conducted a one-year follow-up to record the timing of their pregnancies. In addition, the researchers tested their urine samples for concentrations of endocrine-disrupting anti-UV ingredients. The results, which will be published on the website of the American Journal of Epidemiology, show that the benzophenone chemicals in sunscreen do have a harmful effect on male fertility.

Expert opinion: sunscreen is still necessary for healthy skin

Although the chemicals in sunscreen can have certain adverse effects, experts stress that for the sake of our skin health, it is important to continue to apply sunscreen outdoors to prevent further damage to the skin from UV rays.
