Precautions for measles vaccination

April 8, 2023
Measles vaccine is a lyophilized live attenuated measles vaccine that is used as an effective means of preventing measles and controlling measles transmission.

Contraindications to vaccination

People who are allergic to any of the components of the measles vaccine, including gelatin and other excipients and antibiotics such as gentamicin sulfate and kanamycin sulfate, should not receive measles vaccination; people with immunodeficiency and immunocompromise, people with a history of severe allergic diseases, and people undergoing immunosuppressive treatment should also not receive measles vaccination.

Temporary unsuitable groups for vaccination

Some groups are not suitable for measles vaccination during physiological or pathological periods, such as those with fever or acute infectious diseases, women during pregnancy, and those who have not had immunoglobulin injections for more than three months. In addition, the measles vaccine should not be given at the same time as the hepatitis B vaccine to avoid interference between antigens.

Note for women of childbearing age

Women of childbearing age should receive the measles vaccine before they become pregnant and use contraception for at least three months after successful vaccination to reduce the incidence of measles in newborns and to increase protection for adults.

Note on injection procedures

The measles vaccine is usually administered subcutaneously or intramuscularly. When administering the measles vaccine with alcohol, it is important that the vaccine does not come into contact with alcohol or other disinfectants, and that the alcohol dries on the skin after disinfection before injection. When pulling out the needle after vaccination, do not let the vaccine flow out from the eye of the needle; do not press the eye of the needle with an alcohol cotton ball after vaccination, but choose a dry medical disinfectant cotton ball to do so.

Note after vaccination

A small number of people may have different degrees of allergic reactions after measles vaccination, so it is necessary to take a break and observe for 30 minutes before leaving after measles vaccination, and pay attention to not touching water at the eye of the needle for 1-2 days after vaccination to avoid infection. You should also take rest and not eat spicy and acidic foods.
