What is the cause of watery eyes

April 6, 2023
Under normal circumstances, our tear glands secrete 0.5-0.6 ml of tear fluid during the day, which plays the role of moistening, protecting the cornea, flushing tiny foreign bodies, disinfection and sterilization; part of the tear fluid is evaporated when it passes through the eye, and the rest flows from the tear duct into the nasal cavity, so we usually do not feel teary; what is wrong with teary eyes? What causes eye tearing?

Normal Tears

In daily life, often due to emotional fluctuations, foreign body stimulation, special smells, yawning, coughing, cold and other situations cause a sharp increase in tears, which belong to normal tears, is a protective response of the eye to various external stimuli, through tear secretion to reduce emotional stress or relieve various stimuli. At this time, shed some tears, is good for the body.

Cold stimulation

When you go out in a cold, sandy environment, the cold wind stimulates the tear glands to be hypersecreted, the muscles around the eyes contract, squeezing the tear ducts, the discharge of tears from the nasal cavity is blocked, and the phenomenon of tears occurs. If there is chronic conjunctivitis, the tearing will be more intense. It is recommended to wear glasses when going out to reduce the irritation. On the other hand, irritation of the trigeminal and facial nerves, or facial nerve paralysis, can also cause excessive secretion of tears that are too late to evaporate or drain from the nasal passages, causing more than one tear. A careful diagnosis should be sought from a doctor.

Eye diseases

Tears are both a defensive and protective response of the eyes and a harbinger of eye disease. Many eye diseases can cause recurrent tearing, such as trachoma, entropion, conjunctivitis, keratitis, corneal conjunctival foreign bodies, refractive error, etc., which can cause conjunctival congestion or damage to the cornea, causing increased sensitivity to external stimuli and increased tearing, and can be accompanied by photophobia and eye pain. Therefore, once these discomforts appear, timely ophthalmology diagnosis and treatment is required.

Poor tear ducts

The lacrimal duct is the channel for introducing tears into the nasal cavity and is located at the inner corner of the lower eyelid; if the tear drainage system is malfunctioning, such as abnormal location of the tear dots, narrowing or blockage of any of the lacrimal ducts, inflammation of the lacrimal ducts (chronic dacryocystitis), or tear insufficiency, it can lead to the inability to drain tears and cause frequent tearing. Generally, if the tearing persists for more than 3 weeks, you should seek prompt examination and consultation with a specialist.

Nasal Diseases

Nasal diseases can cause narrowing or obstruction of the tear duct, resulting in poor drainage of tears through the nasolacrimal duct and excessive tearing, such as nasal trauma, rhinitis, nasal polyps, deviated nasal septum, nasal tumors, etc. These conditions should be treated actively. These conditions should be actively treated for the primary nasal disease and the obstruction should be lifted, and the tearing phenomenon can be relieved.
