First aid measures for gas poisoning
March 31, 2023
Gas poisoning is carbon monoxide poisoning, because of the high content of carbon monoxide in the gas, the gas enters the body and combines with the hemoglobin of the blood, resulting in the lack of oxygen and poisoning of the human body, if the rescue is not timely, it will endanger people's lives, so it is vital to popularize the first aid measures for gas poisoning.
What is gas poisoning
Gas poisoning is medically called carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, non-irritating, lighter-than-air, highly toxic gas. If the content of carbon monoxide in the air reaches 0.05%, it can poison people. Because carbon monoxide is colorless and tasteless, it forms carboxyhemoglobin in the blood, which makes hemoglobin lose its function of transporting oxygen. The human blood cannot supply sufficient oxygen to the tissues and organs of the body in time, and once the supply of oxygen is cut off, the oxygen in the body is only enough to consume for 10 minutes, which quickly causes coma and endangers the life of the person.
Measures to deal with different states of gas poisoning
Mild poisoning
In mild cases, the patient becomes nauseous and dizzy, for example, while cooking, and then feels weak and wants to sleep. At this time, open the window quickly, and then leave this environment by yourself while you are conscious. Recovery is possible after several hours of ventilation
Moderate poisoning
On top of a mild degree, a semi-conscious state occurs. For example, being able to wake up, but then falling asleep immediately afterwards. At this time, it is necessary to call emergency and carry her outside with others before the emergency vehicle arrives. If recognized in time and effective measures are taken, it is basically curable and rarely leaves after-effects.
Severe poisoning
At this point, the patient is in a complete and deep coma. The patient cannot be woken up by screaming. He is also incontinent. He does not respond to tapping. At this time, the patient is first carried outside, pay attention to keep warm. Then, before the arrival of the emergency vehicle, the patient's body into the side, so that the vomit inside out, to avoid asphyxiation. Then pat her back again. Make sure he can breathe well and wait for the ambulance to arrive. In extremely critical cases, serious sequelae such as dementia, paralysis, and loss of ability to work and live may be left behind.
First aid measures for gas poisoning
Open windows immediately
1, if a gas poisoning accident is found, rescuers, should be the first time low or creeping into the room (because the density of carbon monoxide is slightly lighter than air, so floating in the upper layer), quickly open all ventilation doors and windows, if you can find the source of gas can quickly turn off the gas switch, but must not be delayed for this, looking around.
2, when entering the interior is strictly prohibited to carry open flame, especially in the case of open gas suicide, indoor gas concentration is too high, press the doorbell, open the electric flower generated by indoor electric lights can cause an explosion.
Quickly transfer
Quickly remove the poisoned person from the poisoned environment, move to a safe and ventilated place, lay the patient flat with the head to the side to prevent asphyxiation due to accidental inhalation of vomit into the lungs, and cover with clothes to keep warm.
Open the airway
Untie the collar and trouser belt of the poisoned person to facilitate smooth breathing. For those who are unconscious, remove secretions and vomit from the mouth and nasal cavity, tilt the head to the side to keep the airway open and avoid asphyxiation.
Call the emergency number
As soon as the patient is moved to a ventilated place, call the emergency number 120 so that you can get help most quickly, correct the oxygen deficiency and be ready to send to a hospital with a hyperbaric chamber for resuscitation.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
For those who are unconscious but breathing, needles or fingernails can be used to facilitate wakefulness at the human midpoint. In case of loss of consciousness, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest, CPR (artificial respiration, external cardiac compressions) should be performed immediately on the spot until the patient wakes up or 120 arrives.
Misconceptions about first aid for gas poisoning
Myth 1: Freezing will wake you up
Poisoning incidents mostly occur in winter, and some people are put outside by ambulance after being poisoned, and they think that a cold and ventilation can make the poisoned person wake up. In fact, cold stimulation will not only aggravate the poisoned person's lack of oxygen, but also lead to peripheral circulatory disorders and induce shock and death.
Myth 2: Put a pot of water by the fireside
Some people think that putting a pot of water by the fireside can prevent poisoning. It is scientifically proven that carbon monoxide is insoluble in water. To prevent poisoning, the key is not to be too strict with doors and windows, or to install a breeze bucket and have a well ventilated chimney.
How dangerous is gas poisoning
Do not underestimate the power of carbon monoxide in gas. If not ventilated, you will be unconscious in 5-10 minutes, in shock in 10-15 minutes, and in heart failure or brain death in 15-30 minutes or more. In other words, once the above situation is found, it is necessary to fight for time to self-rescue or rescue.
Precautions
Remind the public to use gas appliances, especially gas water heaters, in the use of the process, be sure to pay attention to ventilation. The use of gas water heaters, in accordance with the provisions of the installation of exhaust ducts to avoid the exhaust gas directly into the room. Usually pay attention to check the gas piping at home, when not in use should close the main valve to avoid gas leakage. If you find someone suffering from gas poisoning, you should immediately open doors and windows for ventilation, move the patient to a ventilated environment, and call 120 in time.
Tips
1、After the arrival of ambulance personnel, they will immediately administer oxygen, recommend intravenous access, and transfer to the hospital for treatment.
2, usually pay attention to living habits to avoid causing carbon monoxide poisoning. Indoor furnaces should be installed with exhaust chimneys, and the room should be well ventilated; gas pipes should be frequently overhauled to prevent gas leakage; industrial production plants should carefully implement safety operating procedures.
