What are the dangers of smoking

March 30, 2023
To understand what the dangers of smoking are, you may want to first understand the "appeal" of smoking: the Spanish in Europe were the first to discover tobacco, and it was introduced to our country from the Philippines in the Ming Dynasty. After entering any country, cigarettes became popular among all classes of men. Because smoking is not restricted by time and place, in the eyes of many people, smoking can refresh the mind, show manliness, and even smoking high-grade cigarettes has become a symbol of status. But in fact, smoking has a toxic effect on the human body. Let's take a look at what toxic substances are in your beloved smoke that makes you puff up, and what harm it can cause.

The dangers of nicotine

Nicotine, also known as nicotine, is the main culprit in the harmful effects of smoking. After entering the body, nicotine has a very complex effect. At first, smokers feel invigorated, fatigue is lifted, and work efficiency is increased, but afterwards, the nervous system is quickly suppressed, and long-term smokers will experience memory loss, decreased reaction sensitivity, and reduced work efficiency. An ordinary cigarette contains 20 to 30 mg of nicotine, cigars contain 100 to 150 mg. Some studies have shown that if about 4 mg of nicotine is taken orally, it can cause acute symptoms of poisoning, and more than 50 mg can kill; if 25 mg of nicotine is injected into a cow, it can kill it immediately.

The dangers of carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is the most concentrated harmful substance in smokers' smoke, and one cigarette can produce 12 milliliters of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide enters the air with a smaller proportion as the cigarette burns shorter and the amount inhaled becomes greater. After entering the body, carbon monoxide will compete with oxygen for hemoglobin, whose pro-hemoglobin capacity is 250 times higher than that of oxygen, and once combined with hemoglobin, it is difficult to separate. The oxygen content in the blood is drastically reduced, causing hypoxia in tissues and organs, which can cause chronic damage to organs such as the heart and brain.

Hazards of tar

Tar, also known as tobacco oil sub, contains about 1 billion or so tar particles per milliliter of smoke, about 70%, which is inhaled by the human body into the bronchial tubes. Tar is a cancer-promoting and carcinogenic substance that can change cell genes and turn normal cells into cancer cells; phenols and aldehydes in tar have a direct stimulating and corrosive effect on the respiratory tract and have a cancer-promoting effect, speeding up the rate of cell cancer.

Hazards of cyanide

Cyanide is a highly toxic substance that can cause cellular hypoxia and is toxic to all organs of the body. Cyanide in tobacco can directly inhibit the movement of cilia in the epithelial cells of the airways, affecting the expulsion of dust and germs from the airways and contributing to bronchitis.

Hazards of radioactive substances

The radioactive substances in tobacco are absorbed from fertilizer, soil, air and water during the growing period, and will enter the body with smoke during the burning process, part of which is removed and part of which gathers in the human body to become a source of radiation. According to research, smoking a pack and a half a day, a year of radiation exposure to the human body is equivalent to the amount of 300 x-ray chest X-ray on the body surface, which is one of the causes of smoking cancer.

The dangers of heavy metals

Tobacco contains compounds of heavy metal elements nickel, mercury, cadmium, lead and antimony, which form very fine smoke particles when smoked and enter the body through the lungs, which can cause damage to the cells of the human internal organs.

The dangers of smoking in adolescents

The earlier you smoke, the earlier the age of lung cancer and the more likely you are to develop coronary heart disease. Based on the above harmful substances, the harm of smoking can be summarized as follows: it is the root cause of many types of cancer, which can lead to lung cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, kidney cancer, bladder cancer, uterine cancer and other cancers; it has a damaging effect on the nervous system; it is harmful to the cardiovascular system; it causes damage to the respiratory system; it is harmful to the digestive system; it makes sexual function decline and even leads to impotence; women who smoke are prone to premature aging, cervical cancer, uterine endometritis, and infertility.
