Aging and Brain Health: The Role of Nutrition and Blood Vessels

December 9, 2023

As people reach middle age, they will notice a significant decline in physical strength and a decrease in mental agility, indicating the onset of brain aging. How does aging occur? Any hardening of blood vessels in the brain is a cause of aging. Blood vessels are pathways that transport nutrients such as glucose and oxygen to the brain. If they become blocked or ruptured, nutrients cannot reach the brain, leading to phenomena such as senile dementia. Blocking of brain blood vessels is also known as cerebral infarction, while the rupture of blood vessels is called cerebral hemorrhage or stroke. These are all acute cerebrovascular diseases, usually caused by improper diet. To prevent these diseases, attention should be paid to consuming appropriate foods to ensure adequate and balanced nutrition.

Foods rich in calcium are beneficial to the brain, as calcium has a stabilizing effect on the mind and expands blood vessels. Middle-aged and elderly people should consume more dairy products, soy and soy products, and seaweed, as these have a good effect on brain health. B vitamins play an extremely important role in maintaining the normal functioning of nerves and many enzymes. Foods rich in B vitamins include peanuts, tofu, shiitake mushrooms, brown rice, green leafy vegetables, and wheat germ. Vitamin E is known as the anti-aging vitamin, as it helps eliminate free radicals in the body and prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Free radicals are a major cause of aging in the body, and vitamin E can remove these "junk" substances. The oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids is also one of the factors that cause cell damage and ultimately lead to aging. Vitamin E can protect polyunsaturated fatty acids from oxidation and prevent cell aging. Walnuts, peanuts, and animal livers are rich sources of vitamin E. Additionally, mushrooms, alkaline foods, and fermented foods are also beneficial to brain health.
