The Dangers of Drinking Alcohol Before Bedtime for Elderly People: Time to Change Habits

Many elderly people have the habit of drinking two glasses of white wine before going to bed, thinking that it helps to dispel cold, induce sleep, and relieve fatigue. Recent research has shown that these beliefs are not scientifically supported. On the contrary, if there are cardiovascular diseases, it may lead to cerebral hemorrhage or sudden cardiac death, which should be highly concerned.

Drinking alcohol before bedtime, when there is already very little food in the stomach, the alcohol will be absorbed into the blood within a few minutes. The high alcohol content in the blood will strongly stimulate the inner wall of the blood vessels, causing high blood pressure. The more one drinks, the higher the blood pressure. This can cause the already hardened blood vessels in the brain to rupture, leading to cerebral hemorrhage.

Researchers have also observed that people who drink alcohol before bedtime and experience two episodes of snoring (i.e., breathing disorders), with each episode lasting for more than ten seconds, not only increase blood pressure but also cause coronary artery spasm, angina, myocardial infarction, and even sudden death due to cardiac dysfunction.

Therefore, it is best for elderly people who have the habit of drinking a few sips before bedtime to change this habit to prevent unforeseen accidents.
