The Impact of Acupoint Stimulation on Immune Function: A Scientific Exploration

November 28, 2023

  I. Head

Baihui Point (scratching and scraping can be used, with scraping techniques such as point method, pressing method, and trembling method)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that Baihui Point has a certain impact on immune function. Moxibustion on "Baihui" can significantly increase the total complement content, serum immunoglobulin, and total white blood cell count in rabbits' blood.

  II. Neck

Dazhui Point (scratching and cupping can be used, with scraping and cupping techniques mainly using scraping and leaving cupping)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that stimulating Dazhui Point has a certain impact on improving immune function. Needling Dazhui and other points can increase complement activity, and needling Dazhui alone can increase white blood cells. Moxibustion or electroacupuncture on Dazhui, Zusanli, and other points can enhance the phagocytic function of reticuloendothelial system. Needling "Dazhui" and other points in rats can also enhance the phagocytic function of liver reticuloendothelial system, with the highest phagocytic capacity reaching 56.8%.

  III. Chest

The entire chest (scratching and cupping can be used, using scraping method with a thick-edged scraping plate to scrape the chest and flash cupping on the acupoints below)

The key point of scraping the chest is the area around the Ren Meridian. From the Tianzhu acupoint to the Zhongting acupoint, scraping from top to bottom can stimulate the thymus. The thymus is a cone-shaped organ composed of asymmetric left and right lobes. The majority of the thymus is located in the ventral part of the upper mediastinum, and a small part extends downward into the anterior mediastinum. Some parts are located in the thoracic cavity, and some parts are located in the neck. The part in the thoracic cavity is located between the sternum and the pericardium. The part in the neck is located behind the sternothyroid muscle and the sternohyoid muscle, in front of the trachea and on both sides. The upper end of the thymus sometimes reaches the lower edge of the thyroid gland.

Note: The thymus is both a lymphatic organ and has endocrine function. The thymus cultivates various T cells and plays an important role in cellular immune function. In addition, the thymus can produce hormone-like substances such as thymosin and thymopoietin.

IV. Abdomen

Zhongwan Point (scratching and cupping can be used)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that moxibustion on Zhongwan Point can improve the body's immune defense function. In an experimental study conducted on mice, moxibustion on "Zhongwan" every other day for a total of three times was performed, and the phagocytic activity of liver, spleen, and peritoneal macrophages was measured. The results showed that the phagocytic activity of macrophages in the moxibustion group was significantly enhanced compared to the control group. The enhancement of phagocytic activity was most significant in the liver and peritoneal cavity (P<0.05).

V. Back

Shenshu Point (scratching and cupping can be used)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that needling Shenshu Point can enhance the phagocytic ability of the reticuloendothelial system. For example, needling "Zusanli" and "Shenshu" once can significantly enhance the phagocytic function of macrophages in rabbits.

VI. Upper Limbs

Hegu Point (scratching and cupping can be used)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that needling Hegu Point has an adjusting effect on the immune system. Based on the results of three tests on 70 patients before and after electroacupuncture, including active and inactive rose petal tests and lymphocyte transformation test, it was found that the immune function of patients with low or normal levels of cell immunity tended to improve after needling, with an average increase of 12.7-13.0 in the three tests (P<0.01).

VII. Lower Limbs

Zusanli Point (scratching and cupping can be used)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that needling Zusanli Point has a certain impact on immune function. It has been reported that needling "Zusanli" in sensitized rabbits with mast cells can prolong the duration of antibodies in the blood. Observation of granuloma in rabbits after needling "Zusanli" showed that needling can inhibit lesion permeability and reduce inflammatory exudate. It can also inhibit the migration of inflammatory white blood cells.

VIII. Lower Limbs

Sanyinjiao Point (scratching and cupping can be used)

Note: Scientific experiments have shown that needling "Sanyinjiao" can significantly increase lymphocytes and lymph volume in animals, and there is a significant increase in T lymphocytes after needling compared to before needling.
