Why Does Toner Sting? Understanding the Causes of Skin Sensation

October 18, 2023

When it comes to daily skincare routines, toner is an essential step. Many people experience a stinging sensation when using toner, leading some to believe that it is a sign of high-quality toner that is effectively absorbed by the skin, while others think that the toner is not suitable for them and continuously switch brands without finding relief from the stinging sensation. So why does toner sting?

Compromised Skin Barrier

A compromised skin barrier is the root cause of the stinging sensation when using toner. The skin barrier protects the skin and shields it from external irritants. When the skin barrier is damaged, external irritants cause a strong reaction in the nerve tissues, resulting in a stinging sensation.

What to do: The skin should be promptly replenished with necessary oils to reduce moisture loss in the stratum corneum. At the same time, it is important to reinforce the replenishment of intercellular substances to gradually repair the damaged skin barrier.

High Irritant Ingredients in Toner

If the toner contains high concentrations of strong acid components (such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, retinoic acid, etc.), ethanol (denatured alcohol), or strong surfactants (such as SLS), it is likely to cause strong irritation to the skin and result in a stinging sensation.

What to do: When selecting toner, avoid these ingredients and opt for toners and skincare products that contain ceramides, bisabolol, aloe polysaccharides, sterols, natural plant oils, and necessary water-soluble components.

Excessive Exfoliation

Appropriate exfoliation can promote skin metabolism and enhance the absorption of skincare products. However, excessive exfoliation can easily damage the stratum corneum, further reducing the skin's tolerance to external irritants and increasing the likelihood of a stinging sensation.

What to do: If a stinging sensation occurs when using a face mask, avoid exfoliation. Additionally, take protective measures such as using sunscreen when going outdoors to protect the skin.

Sensitive Skin during Seasonal Changes

When using toner, the skin is more prone to a stinging sensation during seasonal changes. This is because the skin is more sensitive during these periods and more reactive to changes in the environment. Seasonal changes can be significant, and if the skin cannot adapt, a stinging sensation may occur.

What to do: Pay attention to basic skincare during seasonal changes and use completely non-irritating products. Once the skin has adapted to the climate, other products can be used.

Other Factors that Cause Skin Stinging

Living in heavily polluted areas, irregular and unstable daily routines, imbalanced diet leading to disrupted skin oil-water balance, as well as stress and emotional changes, can all weaken the skin's resistance and cause a stinging sensation when using toner or other skincare products.
