Treating Taste Abnormalities with Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Comprehensive Approach

Taste abnormalities refer to the patient's perception of abnormal taste in the mouth, such as sourness, bitterness, saltiness, etc. This often occurs when there is a pathological change in the organs. Therefore, taste abnormalities can be used as one of the basis for diagnosing and treating diseases in traditional Chinese medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine has certain therapeutic effects on taste abnormalities. The following Chinese patent medicines can be used for treatment based on different patterns.

Internal Treatment with Chinese Patent Medicines

Halitosis: Halitosis refers to the presence of a foul odor in the mouth. Traditional Chinese medicine categorizes the treatment of halitosis into the following three patterns:

Excessive Stomach Heat Pattern: Main symptoms include halitosis, thirst with preference for cold drinks, oral ulcers, gingival redness and swelling, constipation with dry stools, short and yellow urine, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and slippery and rapid pulse. Treatment should focus on clearing stomach heat. Options include Huanglian Shangqing Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Sanhuang Pills, 4 pills per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Niuhuang Qingwei Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Phlegm-Heat Obstructing the Lungs Pattern: Main symptoms include foul breath, chest pain and oppression, cough with yellow and sticky phlegm, constipation with dry stools, short and yellow urine, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and slippery and rapid pulse. Treatment should focus on clearing heat and promoting lung function. Options include Lingyang Qingfei Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Qingqi Huatan Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Compound Houttuynia Cordata Tablets, 5 tablets per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Gastrointestinal Food Stagnation Pattern: Main symptoms include sour taste in the mouth, distention and fullness of the epigastric and abdominal regions, belching with acid regurgitation, loose or unsatisfactory stools, decreased urine output, pale tongue with thick and greasy coating, and slippery pulse. Treatment should focus on promoting digestion and resolving food stagnation. Options include Baohe Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Dashan Hawthorn Pills, 1 pill per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Muxiang Binglang Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Compound Chicken Gizzard Membrane Tablets, 5 tablets per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Bitter Taste: Patients with bitter taste often experience irritability, dizziness, red eyes, hypochondriac pain, yellow and short urine, dry stools, and redness at the edges of the tongue. Options for treatment include Longdan Xiegan Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Danzhi Xiaoyao Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Xiakucao Gao, 10ml per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Yinzhi Huang Oral Liquid, 1 bottle per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Sour Taste: Sour taste refers to the perception of sourness in the mouth, sometimes accompanied by a sour odor detectable by others.

Liver-Stomach Disharmony Pattern: Main symptoms include sour taste in the mouth, restlessness, poor appetite, belching, distention and pain in the hypochondriac region, pale tongue with thin coating, and wiry pulse. Treatment should focus on soothing the liver and harmonizing the stomach. Options include Tiaowei Shugan Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Chenxiang Huaxi Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Stagnation of Retained Food Pattern: Main symptoms include sour taste in the mouth, belching with acid or rancid taste, poor appetite, distention and fullness in the epigastric region, pale tongue with thick and greasy coating, and slippery pulse. Treatment should focus on promoting digestion and resolving food stagnation. Options include Zhishi Daozhi Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Baohe Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Xiangsha Yangwei Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Qu Mai Chongji, 1 packet per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Salty Taste: Salty taste refers to the perception of a salty taste in the mouth, sometimes accompanied by salty phlegm and saliva, dry throat, dizziness, tinnitus, restlessness, hot sensation in the palms and soles, sore and weak lower back and knees, disturbed sleep with night sweats, and short and red urine. Treatment should focus on nourishing yin and tonifying the kidneys. Options include Zhibai Dihuang Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Dabuyin Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Ziyin Ganlu Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Bland Taste: Bland taste refers to a decreased sense of taste in the mouth, with patients unable to taste the flavor of food. Patients may also have a loss of appetite, fatigue, shortness of breath, weakness, pale tongue with thin white coating, and weak pulse. Treatment should focus on invigorating the spleen and replenishing qi, as well as promoting digestion and harmonizing the stomach. Options include Shenling Baizhu Powder, 10g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Renshen Jianpi Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Xiangsha Liujunzi Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Greasy Taste: Greasy taste refers to a sticky and unpleasant feeling on the tongue.

Dampness and Cold Obstructing the Spleen Pattern: Main symptoms include sticky and greasy taste in the mouth, bland taste without thirst, lack of appetite, distention in the epigastric region, and limb weakness. Treatment should focus on invigorating the spleen and eliminating dampness. Options include Pingwei Powder, 10g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Lizhong Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Liangfu Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

Damp-Heat Obstructing the Middle Pattern: Main symptoms include sticky and greasy taste in the mouth, foul breath, loss of taste, dry mouth without desire to drink, distention in the epigastric region, poor appetite, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and slippery pulse. Treatment should focus on clearing heat and eliminating dampness. Options include Ganlu Xiaodu Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; Liuhe Dingzhong Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day; or Qingwei Huanglian Pills, 9g per dose, taken orally three times a day.

External Treatment with Chinese Patent Medicines

1. Huanglian Capsules: Take 2 capsules of Huanglian, remove the capsule shell, grind it into fine powder, mix with water to form a paste, and apply it externally to the Yongquan acupoints on both feet. Change the paste once a day for 3-5 consecutive days. This can help clear heat and detoxify, and is suitable for halitosis and bitter taste in the mouth.

2. Huangqin Tablets: Grind 3 tablets of Huangqin into fine powder and mix with water to form a paste.
