Eliminating Eye Bags with Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Diet Therapy
Once eye bags appear, the appearance of a person will appear dull and give the impression of lacking vitality. As age increases, eye bags will become more severe, causing distress for many office workers. Below are the methods of using acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine to eliminate eye bags:
Traditional Chinese medicine has found that there are many causes of eye bags, including kidney deficiency and severe lack of sleep or sleep fatigue. Once eye bags appear, they can make a person look haggard and aged. Importantly, drinking too much water before sleeping can also cause swelling around the eyes and form eye bags the next day.
Five Causes of Eye Bags
1. Weak spleen and stomach function can cause water accumulation in the body, resulting in loose lower eyelids and the formation of eye bags;
2. The liver is one of the detoxification and hematopoietic systems. Liver problems are manifested in the eyes. If the liver cannot eliminate toxins, it will form eye bags;
3. Kidney deficiency can cause metabolic disorders of body fluids, insufficient kidney qi, and long-term poor blood circulation, leading to the appearance of eye bags;
4. From the perspective of meridians, the lower eyelids are connected to the stomach meridian. The location of eye bags corresponds to the Chengqi and Sibai acupoints of the stomach meridian. The decline of body fluid metabolic function, deterioration of stomach function, and blockage of Chengqi and Sibai acupoints can cause eye bags;
5. The blood circulation around the eyes is prone to congestion due to overwork. Blocked blood vessels lead to poor blood flow, slowing down lymphatic metabolism, causing excess water and blood to accumulate below the eyes, forming eye bags.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture and Diet Therapy to Eliminate Eye Bags
From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, the fundamental cause of eye bags formation is the dysfunction of organs. In acupuncture treatment, body acupuncture is generally used, and methods such as moxibustion and electroacupuncture are also chosen for treatment.
1. Body Acupuncture
Acupoints: Yangbai, Yuyao, Taiyang, Yintang, Jingming, Tongzilian, Chengqi, Sibai, Sizhukong. For spleen deficiency, add Piyu, Stomach Yu, Zusanli, Yinlingquan, Sanyinjiao; for kidney deficiency with water accumulation, add Shenyu, Sanjiaoyu, Guanyuan, Ququan, Sanyinjiao, Taixi; for liver and kidney deficiency, add Ganyu, Shenyu, Sanyinjiao, Taixi, Yongquan, Taichong, Xingjian; for blood stasis, add Ganyu, Piyu, Xuehai, Sanyinjiao, Taichong (see Figure 1). Use 32-34 gauge, 0.5-inch sterile needles. Insert the needle straight into Yangbai, penetrate Yuyao, and parallel the needle shaft to the eyelid edge. Alternate the direction of the needle tip inward or outward with each insertion. For other acupoints, use routine needling techniques. Leave the needles in for 30 minutes, and press the needle holes on the face when removing the needles. Once every other day, 20 sessions make up one course of treatment, with an interval of about 10 days between courses.
2. Electroacupuncture
Acupoints: Local eye bags, Taiyang, Sibai through the inner and outer canthus (see Figure 1). Place the two electrodes of the electroacupuncture device separately on the eye bags (avoiding contact between the two electrodes). Turn on the power, select low frequency 3-50 times/second, sparse or continuous waves, and medium intensity stimulation. The degree of stimulation is based on obvious trembling in the eye bags area. Apply electricity for 20-30 minutes, once daily. Adjust to once every other day after seeing results.
3. Moxibustion
Acupoints: Sanyinjiao, Guanyuan, Jingmen, Hegu, Taiyang, Sibai, Shenyu, Hegu (see Figure 3). Ignite the moxa stick and hold it 2 centimeters away from the acupoints, ensuring that the local area feels warm. The local skin may become red. Moxibustion can be applied for 10-15 minutes per acupoint, once daily. Ten sessions make up one course of treatment, with a rest period of 2-3 days between courses.
