[The Harm of Constipation to the Body]

  1. Disorder of gastrointestinal nerve function

During constipation, the stool is retained, and the absorption of harmful substances can cause disorder of gastrointestinal nerve function, leading to loss of appetite; bloating, belching, bitter taste in the mouth, and increased gas from the anus.

  2. Formation of fecal ulcers

Hard stool compresses the intestinal cavity, causing narrowing of the intestinal cavity and structures around the pelvic cavity, hindering the expansion of the colon; causing rectal or colon compression and forming fecal ulcers, and in severe cases, it can cause intestinal perforation.

  3. Colon cancer

It may be due to the long-term inability to eliminate carcinogens in the intestine due to constipation. According to data, about 10% of severe constipation patients have colon cancer.

  4. Causes anorectal diseases

During constipation, difficulty in defecation and dry stool can directly cause or exacerbate anorectal diseases such as rectal inflammation, anal fissures, and hemorrhoids.

  5. Impairs brain function

During constipation, metabolic waste products stagnate in the digestive tract, and the action of bacteria produces a large amount of harmful substances such as methane, phenol, and ammonia; some of these substances diffuse into the central nervous system, interfere with brain function, and manifest as decreased memory, scattered attention, and slow thinking.

[Treatment of Constipation with Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture]

Firstly, the patient can be treated with acupuncture at the Tian Shu, Da Chang Yu, and Zhi Gou acupoints. At the same time, additional treatment acupoints can be selected based on the cause of constipation, and suitable acupuncture treatment methods can be chosen.

For patients with solid stool, purgative acupuncture can be used; for patients with deficient stool, tonifying acupuncture can be used; for patients with cold stool, additional acupoints such as Shen Que and Qi Hai can be added, and the treatment method of moxibustion can be added; for patients with heat-accumulated stool, additional acupoints such as He Gu and Qu Chi can be used; for patients with Qi stagnation and stool retention, additional acupoints such as Zhong Wan and Xing Jian can be used; for constipation patients with weak Qi and blood, additional acupoints such as Pi Yu and Wei Yu can be used.

The first group of acupoints that can be selected include Pi Yu, Yang Guan, Zu San Li, San Yin Jiao, and Zhong Liao. The specific acupuncture method that can be used is to take 2 needles each time and use the puncture therapy. The second group of acupoints that need to be selected include Zu San Li, Zhi Gou, Yang Ling Quan, and Da Heng Xue. Acupuncture needs to be done once daily, and the method of lifting and scraping the needles with an arc needs to be used, leaving the needles in the acupoints for 15 minutes with moderate stimulation.

If the patient uses auricular acupuncture, the acupoints that need to be selected include the lower rectum, large intestine, liver, and heart. When performing acupuncture, the acupoints need to be pressed with Wang Bu Liao Xing seeds, and the seeds need to be changed once a week for the patient.

[Massage the Zhi Gou Acupoint to Treat Constipation]

  Massage Method 1:

  Use the tip of one thumb to press the Zhi Gou acupoint on the other hand, and place the other four fingers on the opposite side of the acupoint. Press the thumb vertically and press down, then flex and extend the wrist joint of the pressed hand;

Allow the stimulation to reach the deep layer of the muscle tissue, causing sensations such as acid, numbness, swelling, pain, heat, and radiation, and relax gradually, then gently knead the local area.

Repeat this operation. Alternate between left and right, and press each acupoint for 5 to 10 minutes each time.

  Massage Method 2:

Try pressing the Zhi Gou acupoint on both sides with the thumbs before defecation, from light to heavy. Massage and pressure will cause a sense of acid, numbness, swelling, and pain at the pressed areas. For those who are sensitive, after 10 to 15 minutes, the intestinal peristalsis will begin to intensify and the urge to defecate will occur. Then try to defecate.

If unsuccessful, try again the next day. 10 times are considered one course of treatment. For patients with "hiccup", massage combined with deep breathing exercises can be performed as soon as possible to achieve immediate results.
