Commonly Used Positions for Acupuncture: A Guide for Clinical Practice

December 9, 2023

In clinical practice, there are several commonly used positions for acupuncture:

①Supine position: Suitable for accessing acupoints on the head, face, chest, abdomen, and upper and lower limbs.

②Lateral position: Suitable for accessing acupoints along the Gallbladder meridian on the side of the body, as well as some acupoints on the upper and lower limbs.

③Prone position: Suitable for accessing acupoints on the head, neck, back, lower back, buttocks, as well as acupoints on the back of the lower limbs and upper limbs.

④Semi-reclining position: Suitable for accessing acupoints on the front of the head, face, and anterior neck.

⑤Prone sitting position: Suitable for accessing acupoints on the back of the head, neck, and back.

⑥Lateral sitting position: Suitable for accessing acupoints on one side of the head, cheek, and anterior and posterior parts of the ear.

In addition to the commonly used positions mentioned above, for certain acupoints, different positions should be adopted based on the specific requirements of these acupoints. At the same time, attention should be paid to using a single position as much as possible when needling the acupoints listed in the prescription. If it is necessary to use two or more positions due to the therapeutic needs and the specific location characteristics of certain acupoints, flexibility should be exercised based on the patient's constitution, condition, and other specific circumstances. For initial visits, patients with mental tension, or elderly, weak, and seriously ill patients, if conditions permit, lying position should be preferred to prevent patients from feeling fatigued or dizzy during acupuncture.
