Moxibustion: Precautions and Contraindications

December 6, 2023

Precautions for Moxibustion

1. The practitioner should be serious, focused, and skillful. Before applying moxibustion, the practitioner should explain the requirements and eliminate the patient's fears. If scar moxibustion is necessary, the patient's consent must be obtained, and the moxibustion wounds should be properly handled to prevent infection.

2. Moxibustion should be applied according to the patient's constitution and condition. The acupoints should be accurately selected, and the number of moxibustion points should not be excessive. The heat should be sufficient and the fire should be evenly distributed. Avoid random and excessive moxibustion.

3. Fainting during moxibustion is rare. If fainting occurs, emergency treatment should be administered according to acupuncture methods.

4. During the moxibustion process, precautions should be taken to prevent the moxa from burning clothing or bedding. After moxibustion, the moxa sticks or cones must be extinguished to prevent fire. For patients who are unconscious, slow to react, or have local sensory loss, caution should be taken to avoid excessive moxibustion and burns.

Contraindications for Moxibustion

1. Contraindicated conditions: Patients with rapid pulse, regardless of external or internal heat syndrome, should not receive moxibustion. Moxibustion treatment is also not suitable for patients with high fever, convulsions, extreme exhaustion, and severe emaciation.

2. Contraindicated areas: The heart area, major blood vessels, areas with thin skin and few muscles, the lower abdomen and lumbosacral region in pregnant women, testicles, nipples, and genital area should not be moxibusted. Suppurative moxibustion is not suitable for the face, and scar moxibustion should not be applied to joints.
