Moxibustion: A Traditional Chinese Therapy for Beauty and Health

April 14, 2024

Moxibustion directly or indirectly acts on acupuncture points or affected areas on the body surface by igniting moxa wool, providing warm stimulation to achieve the effects of promoting the smooth flow of meridians, supporting the body's yang energy, and expelling pathogenic factors. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that moxibustion has the functions of warming yang energy, invigorating qi, promoting blood circulation, and strengthening the middle energizer. The book "Ben Cao Zheng Yi" states: "In ancient times, there was no condition that could not be treated with moxibustion. Moxibustion has the greatest application." A large amount of clinical data shows that moxibustion also has beauty and health benefits such as treating facial wrinkles, freckles, acne, and chilblains.

Smoothing Facial Wrinkles: The patient lies supine, fills the navel with salt, and punctures the fresh ginger with a needle a few times before placing it on the navel. Ignite a moxa stick (about the size of a soybean) on top of the ginger and apply moxibustion. If the local burning sensation is unbearable, lift the ginger slightly for a moment and then put it down to continue moxibustion. Repeat this process until the moxa stick is completely burned out, then replace it with a new one, until the local skin becomes slightly red. Apply this treatment once every evening for the beneficial effects of invigorating qi and strengthening the spleen.

Freckles: Ignite a moxa stick and fumigate Hegu, Quchi, and the area of freckles on the face, causing a warm sensation and a reddish hue on the skin. Be careful to prevent moxa ash from falling on the face and causing burns. Apply moxibustion once every evening or every other evening.

Chloasma: Before going to bed, ignite a moxa stick and moxibustion the area of chloasma on the face, keeping the moxa stick 2-3 centimeters away from the skin until a reddish hue appears and a warm sensation is felt. Apply moxibustion for about 10 minutes, being careful to prevent moxa ash from falling and causing burns.

Facial Obesity: Every evening before going to bed, ignite a moxa stick, sit in front of the bed, and moxibustion Zusanli, Tian Shu, and Zhong Wan acupoints for about 5 minutes each. A reddish hue will appear locally, and a comfortable warm feeling will be felt as the degree of moxibustion.

Acne: Ignite a moxa stick and moxibustion the acupoints such as Quan Gu, Xia Guan, Ju Gu, and Ying Xiang on the face, keeping the moxa stick about 1 to 2 centimeters away from the acupoints. Apply moxibustion for 2 minutes per acupoint, until a reddish hue appears on the local skin.
