Saffron Foot Soak: How Much Saffron Should You Use?

November 11, 2023

I usually like to soak my feet, and recently a friend told me that I can use saffron to soak my feet. So, I bought some saffron and I want to ask how much saffron should be used for one foot soak?

How much saffron should be used for one foot soak?

0.1-0.3 grams.

Saffron is a traditional Chinese medicine with the effects of promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, cooling blood, detoxifying, and relieving depression. It can be used to treat conditions such as amenorrhea, postpartum stasis, and depression. Because saffron has a strong blood circulation promoting effect, it is recommended to use 0.1-0.3 grams of saffron for foot soaking. Using too much may cause waste and may accelerate blood circulation, leading to dizziness, palpitations, and other discomforts.

Can I soak my feet with saffron every day?

In general, it is possible.

Saffron has a strong blood circulation promoting effect. Soaking feet with saffron can have certain auxiliary therapeutic effects for people with symptoms such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, sprains, and poor sleep. For those with the above symptoms, soaking feet with saffron every day is generally not a problem. However, for ordinary people, it is usually recommended to soak feet 2-3 times a week.

Precautions for soaking feet with saffron

1. Water temperature

When soaking feet with saffron, the water temperature should not be too high. It is generally recommended to be around 40 degrees Celsius. If the water temperature is too high, it may accelerate the circulation of blood throughout the body, increasing the burden on the heart and brain, resulting in dizziness, sweating, and fainting.

2. Timing

It is not advisable to soak feet with saffron on an empty stomach or immediately after a meal. When soaking feet, the blood circulation increases, while the blood supply to the digestive system decreases. Soaking feet on an empty stomach or immediately after a meal may affect the digestive function of the intestines and stomach, which is not conducive to gastrointestinal health. It is generally recommended to soak feet 1-2 hours after a meal or before bedtime. The soaking time should be around 20 minutes. Prolonged soaking is not beneficial to physical health.

3. Container

It is recommended to use a wooden or ceramic container for soaking feet with saffron, and avoid using metal containers. The components of saffron may react with metals, which is not beneficial to human health.

Contraindications for soaking feet with saffron

1. Pregnant women

Saffron has a strong blood circulation promoting effect. Although its topical application is weaker than internal use, its medicinal effect should not be underestimated. It is recommended that pregnant women should not soak their feet with saffron to avoid stimulating the smooth muscles of the uterus, promoting uterine contractions, and causing abdominal discomfort or even threatened miscarriage.

2. Women during menstruation

Soaking feet with saffron can promote blood circulation in the body and also have a certain stimulating effect on the uterus. Soaking feet with saffron during menstruation may increase menstrual flow.

3. People with bleeding disorders

People with bleeding disorders should also avoid soaking their feet with saffron. Saffron can accelerate blood circulation, which may increase bleeding in individuals with bleeding disorders.
