Important Considerations for Taking Danshen: Incompatible Foods and Medications

November 6, 2023

Many drugs have incompatible foods or medications, and Danshen is also a medicinal herb used for health maintenance and treatment of many coronary heart disease and hypertension patients. So what should Danshen not be taken with?

Litchi fruit

In traditional Chinese medicine, there are many herbs with opposing properties. The "Eighteen Incompatibilities of Chinese Medicine" mentions "Danshen and litchi fruit have opposite properties". Taking Danshen with litchi fruit can produce toxic side effects and be harmful to the body. Therefore, when taking Danshen, avoid taking it with litchi fruit.

Anticoagulant drugs

Such as aspirin, warfarin, etc., Danshen also has an antiplatelet effect. Taking it with anticoagulant drugs can enhance the anticoagulant effect, which may cause coagulation dysfunction and local bleeding. Therefore, Danshen should not be taken with anticoagulant drugs.

Antacid drugs

Such as baking soda, Gastropulgite, magnesium oxide, etc., because the ingredients in these drugs can form complexes with Danshen, resulting in insoluble substances, thereby reducing the effectiveness of Danshen.

Androgens

Such as prednisone, methyltestosterone, stanozolol, etc., the active ingredients in Danshen have an antagonistic effect on androgens. Taking it with androgens can reduce the efficacy of androgens.

Milk, soy milk

Because Danshen contains Danshenone, this component will react with soy milk and milk to form insoluble substances, thereby reducing the effectiveness of Danshen. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid taking Danshen with milk or soy milk.

What else to pay attention to when taking Danshen

1. Pay attention to the dosage

The general dosage of Danshen is 10-15 grams, and excessive intake should be avoided. Because Danshen has a strong blood circulation and stasis removal effect, excessive intake of Danshen can stimulate blood vessels and cause gastrointestinal bleeding.

2. Avoid long-term use

It is generally recommended to discontinue Danshen after symptoms improve, and long-term use is not recommended. Because long-term use of Danshen can cause a decrease in blood potassium levels, it is recommended to consume foods high in potassium during the period of taking Danshen, such as potatoes, peanuts, bananas, etc.

3. Pregnant women should not take it

Danshen has a blood circulation and stasis removal effect, which can stimulate uterine blood vessels and cause uterine contractions. Pregnant women taking Danshen in large quantities may cause fetal restlessness and even threatened miscarriage.
