Massage Techniques for Chronic Bronchitis: Acupoints and Self-Massage

Chronic bronchitis refers to the chronic nonspecific inflammation of the organ, bronchial mucosa, and surrounding tissues. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the etiology of chronic bronchitis is related to lung qi exuberance or failure to descend, or kidney qi failure to receive, leading to imbalance of qi circulation. The treatment should focus on promoting lung function, relieving cough, tonifying the kidney, and nourishing qi. Let's take a look at the massage techniques for chronic bronchitis.

Special acupoints for massage in chronic bronchitis

Chize acupoint

This acupoint is located on the lung meridian and is where lung qi gathers. It has the effect of regulating lung qi and promoting blood circulation to relieve pain.

Location: In the elbow area, on the radial side of the biceps brachii, in the depression.

Massage technique: Use the tip of the thumb to press the acupoint, gradually increase the pressure, and stop when there is a sense of soreness and distension. Massage for 2 minutes each time.

Yuzhong acupoint

This acupoint is located on the lung meridian and has the functions of clearing lung heat, relieving cough, and alleviating asthma. Regular massage of this acupoint can effectively relieve cough and sore throat.

Location: On the palm side of the hand, at the midpoint of the first metacarpal bone on the radial side.

Massage method: Extend the palm, use the thumb pulp to knead the acupoint for 3 minutes, alternate between the hands, and apply moderate pressure until there is a sense of soreness and distension.

Lieque acupoint

This acupoint is a collateral point of the lung meridian and large intestine meridian. Pressing the Lieque acupoint has good effects on diseases such as headache, dizziness, cough, and sore throat in the neck and cervical area.

Location: On the forearm, 1.5 inches above the transverse crease of the wrist, between the tendons of the short extensor muscle of the thumb and the long extensor muscle of the thumb, in the depression of the groove of the long extensor muscle of the thumb.

Massage method: Pinch and press the acupoint with the tip of the thumb, apply slight force, and massage for 2 minutes each time.

Full-body massage for chronic bronchitis

1. The patient lies supine, the masseur rubs both hands together to generate heat, and then rubs the palms against the upper limbs 40 times with moderate pressure.

2. Use the thumb or middle finger to press and massage the acupoints Tianfu, Zhongfu, and Tanzhong for 2 minutes each.

3. Separate the hands into claw shape and rub the chest along the direction of the ribs 40 times, until the patient feels slightly warm.

4. The patient lies prone, and the masseur massages the Zhishi acupoint on the back with the palm until the patient feels slightly warm.

5. Press Dazhui acupoint with the tip of the thumb 50 times, until the patient feels sore and distended.

6. Use fingers to vigorously rub and press the neck and cervical area of the patient, massage from top to bottom for 20 times, expand the massage area as much as possible, and aim for a sense of soreness and distension.

7. Press Kongzui acupoint 20 times until the patient feels obvious soreness and distension.

Massage of hands, feet, and ears for chronic bronchitis

1. Place the lower limbs on the opposite knee, rub the Yongquan acupoint with the palm of the hand, and rub repeatedly for 1 minute until the soles of the feet feel warm. Alternate between the two lower limbs.

2. Use the index finger to press and push the lung and bronchial reflex zones using the hook fist technique; knead the thyroid reflex zone with the pinching technique 30 times; scrape and press the lymphatic reflex zone of the chest with the scraping technique 30 times; knead the heart and spleen reflex zones with the hook fist technique 30 times each.

Self-massage for chronic bronchitis

1. Sit with the waist slightly straight, place the palms of the right hand and the back of the left hand lightly on the lower abdomen at Renzhong acupoint, gaze forward with slightly closed eyes, breathe evenly, relax the whole body, and sit quietly for 2 minutes.

2. Use the thumb pulp to press and knead the Zhongfu acupoint on the opposite side with appropriate force for 1 minute, until there is a sense of soreness and distension.

3. Bring the upper limbs around the shoulders, place the middle finger pulp on the same side of the Lung Yu acupoint, and point-massage for 1 minute with appropriate force, until there is a sense of soreness and distension.

4. Place the right palm on the Tanzhong acupoint with appropriate force and massage for 2 minutes.

5. Place the thumb on the Chize acupoint on the opposite side, and the other four fingers encircle the elbow, press and knead with appropriate force for 2 minutes, until there is a sense of soreness and distension. Alternate between the hands.

6. Press and rub the Lieque acupoint on the opposite side with the thumb pulp, the other four fingers are attached to the opposite side of the wrist, press and knead with appropriate force for 2 minutes, alternate between the hands.

7. Place the left palm on the back of the right hand, place the right palm on the upper abdomen, and rotate clockwise with appropriate force for 2 minutes, until the upper abdomen feels warm.

8. Close the four fingers of both hands and place them on both sides of the sternum, push along the ribs for 1-3 minutes.

9. Make a fist with both hands, place the second metacarpophalangeal joint on the Xinshu acupoint, press and knead with appropriate force for 2 minutes.

10. Cross both hands on the waist, place the thumb on the opposite side of the Shenshu acupoint, and the other four fingers attach to the waist, press and knead with appropriate force for 2 minutes.

Care and taboos for chronic bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is more common in winter and spring. Due to low immune function and frequent colds, it is important to improve the body's immune function and prevent colds in the prevention and treatment of chronic bronchitis.
