Can Suoyang still be used after molding?

November 21, 2023

My family recently bought some Suoyang and originally planned to soak it in alcohol. However, when I opened it today, I found that the Suoyang seemed to have molded. I wanted to ask if Suoyang can still be used after molding?

Can Suoyang still be used after molding?

It is generally not recommended for consumption.

If Suoyang has severe mold growth, it is generally not recommended to continue using it. Moldy Suoyang may have altered medicinal properties and may not have the intended therapeutic effects. More importantly, it may contain harmful bacteria that can have adverse effects on the digestive system, liver, respiratory system, and overall health.

What to do if you have eaten moldy Suoyang

1. Observe closely

In general, if you have only consumed a small amount of moldy Suoyang, you may not experience any obvious discomfort. It is recommended to immediately stop using it and closely observe your condition.

2. Drink plenty of water

If you have consumed a larger amount of moldy Suoyang or experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomfort, or diarrhea, it is advisable to drink plenty of warm water. This can help dilute the remaining Suoyang in the gastrointestinal tract and promote its elimination from the body, alleviating the discomfort.

3. Seek medical attention

If the discomfort after consuming moldy Suoyang is severe, persistent, or accompanied by more serious reactions, it is recommended to seek immediate medical attention. Medical professionals may provide treatments such as fluid replacement or gastric lavage to prevent further worsening of symptoms and potential complications.

How to handle moldy Suoyang

1. Dispose of it directly. If Suoyang has significant mold growth, it is definitely not recommended to continue using it. Disposing of it directly is the most convenient way to handle it.

2. Remove the moldy parts. If Suoyang has minor mold growth, you can remove the moldy parts, wash it thoroughly with water, and then dry it in sunlight. It can be used for foot soaking. However, if the mold growth is severe, this method is not recommended.

What does moldy Suoyang look like?

Normally, properly processed Suoyang has a brown or reddish-brown surface, rough texture with obvious longitudinal grooves and irregular depressions. It is hard and difficult to break. It has a slight odor and a sweet yet bitter taste. Moldy Suoyang, on the other hand, may have green or white mold spots, and may even grow white fuzz or attract insects. It also has a noticeable musty smell.

How to store Suoyang to prevent mold growth

1. Store processed Suoyang in a well-ventilated area. Place it in a sealed bag, remove excess air, and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

2. Store fresh Suoyang in the refrigerator. If you have fresh Suoyang, it is recommended to store it in a plastic bag in the refrigerated compartment of the refrigerator. However, fresh Suoyang has a shorter shelf life, so it is advisable to consume it as soon as possible.
