Can Huang Jing be consumed directly?

November 19, 2023

I heard that Huang Jing is a highly nourishing Chinese medicinal herb, which has the functions of nourishing the lungs, invigorating the spleen, and tonifying the kidneys. I also bought some Huang Jing, but I have never taken it before. I would like to ask if Huang Jing can be taken directly?

Can Huang Jing be taken directly?

Raw Huang Jing

It is not recommended to take raw Huang Jing directly.

Because raw Huang Jing contains mucilage and other components, direct consumption can cause a numb tongue sensation and irritation to the throat. It can cause discomfort in the throat, so it is generally not recommended to consume it directly.

Processed Huang Jing

Processed Huang Jing can be taken directly, but it is still not recommended.

After processing, the numbing sensation is eliminated, and in terms of taste, it can be consumed directly. However, in general, it is not recommended to consume processed Huang Jing directly for the following reasons:

1. Processed Huang Jing is a nourishing herb, and its medicinal effects are difficult to absorb when chewed directly. Generally, when boiled in a soup, the medicinal components are more easily extracted and absorbed by the body, resulting in faster effectiveness.

2. Processed Huang Jing has a sticky texture and a sweet taste, which is already difficult for the body to digest. Direct consumption can hinder digestion and may even cause symptoms such as bloating and loose stools.

How much Huang Jing to consume daily

For fresh Huang Jing, the recommended dosage is 30-60g, and for processed Huang Jing, the recommended dosage is 10-30g.

Generally, fresh Huang Jing is not used as a medicine and is only consumed as a health food. The daily dosage is usually 30-60g. Processed Huang Jing, as a medicinal herb, is taken in a dosage of 10-30g. Since Huang Jing is a nourishing Chinese medicinal herb with a sticky texture, excessive consumption may hinder the normal digestion of the spleen and stomach, leading to symptoms of indigestion, bloating, and loose stools.
