Jiu Da Huang is one of the processed products of Da Huang medicinal material. Da Huang has different processing specifications, including raw Da Huang, cooked Da Huang, Jiu Da Huang, vinegar Da Huang, and Da Huang charcoal. Each of them has different clinical effects.
Purgative and heat-clearing
Jiu Da Huang has the effect of purging heat and promoting bowel movement. It is used for gastrointestinal heat retention, constipation with hard stools, abdominal distension and fullness, painful resistance to palpation, and even high fever with delirium and incoherent speech, such as in the case of Da Cheng Qi Tang; or cold accumulation and constipation due to deficiency of spleen yang, such as in the case of Wen Pi Tang.
Toxic-heat resolving and abscess dissipating
Jiu Da Huang can resolve toxins and dissipate abscesses. It is used for hot toxic ulcers, sudden red eye pain, oral ulcers, gingival swelling and pain, such as in the case of Da Huang Mu Dan Pi Tang.
Blood-activating and menstruation-regulating
Jiu Da Huang has the effect of activating blood circulation and regulating menstruation. It is used for menstrual blockage due to blood stasis, postpartum blood stasis, accumulation of masses, as well as for injuries from falls and blood stasis causing pain.
Heat-clearing and dampness-eliminating
Jiu Da Huang can clear heat and eliminate dampness. It is used for jaundice due to damp-heat obstruction, difficulty urinating, dry stools, as well as for hot lin syndrome and stone lin syndrome, such as in the case of Ba Zheng San.
Cooling blood and stopping bleeding
Jiu Da Huang can cool blood and stop bleeding. It is used for bleeding disorders caused by heat injuring the blood vessels, such as vomiting blood, nosebleeds, bloody stools, excessive uterine bleeding, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
