November 15, 2023

Nowadays, the number of people with myopia is increasing, so it is very important to prevent and treat myopia. Scraping therapy is also effective for myopia. So how can eye scraping be used to treat myopia?

Eye Scraping Therapy for Myopia

1. Acupoint Selection

Liver Shu, Kidney Shu, Hegu, Zan Zhu, Jing Ming, Tong Zi Liao, Cheng Qi, Feng Chi, Guang Ming.

Acupoint Selection:

Liver Shu: 1.5 inches below the 9th thoracic vertebrae spinous process, laterally.

Kidney Shu: 1.5 inches below the 2nd lumbar vertebrae spinous process, laterally.

Feng Chi: On both sides below the occipital bone, in the depression between the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the trapezius muscle.

Hegu: Located on the back of the hand, in the depression between the 1st and 2nd metacarpal bones.

Zan Zhu: Located on the face, in the depression between the eyebrows, at the supraorbital notch.

Jing Ming: Slightly above the inner corner of the eye.

Tong Zi Liao: Next to the outer corner of the eye, at the outer edge of the orbit.

Cheng Qi: Directly below the pupil, between the eyeball and the lower edge of the orbit.

Guang Ming: 5 inches above the tip of the lateral ankle, on the anterior edge of the fibula.

2. Scraping Technique

Use a water buffalo horn scraping board and red flower oil as the medium. The scraping technique is direct scraping. The technique used is a supplementation technique.

Scraping Sequence: Scraping Liver Shu and Kidney Shu on the back, and Hegu on the hands; kneading Zan Zhu, Jing Ming, Tong Zi Liao, and Cheng Qi on the face; scraping Feng Chi on the neck, and Guang Ming on the outer side of the lower limbs.

Specific Operation:

(1) Apply red flower oil evenly on the acupoints to be treated.

(2) Use the water buffalo horn scraping board to directly contact the patient's skin and repeatedly scrape the selected areas until petechiae appear under the skin.

(3) Liver Shu and Kidney Shu on the back are scraped using a flat scraping technique: use the flat edge of the scraping board to perform large-scale parallel scraping in the scraping area.

(4) Hegu and Guang Ming on the hands are scraped using an oblique scraping technique: use the flat edge of the scraping board to perform oblique scraping in the scraping area.

(5) Feng Chi on the neck is scraped using an angle scraping technique: use the sharp edge or corner of the scraping board to scrape smaller areas or grooves, hollows, and depressions on the scraping area.

(6) Zan Zhu, Jing Ming, Tong Zi Liao, and Cheng Qi are kneaded with the thumb, with moderate soreness and swelling in the local area.

3. Indications

It is suitable for those who have blurred distant vision and clear near vision, and may also have symptoms such as eye swelling, headache, and visual fatigue.

4. Treatment Course

7 treatments constitute 1 course, generally requiring 5-7 courses of treatment.

Precautions for Myopia Scraping

1. Precautions before Scraping

1. Scraping therapy requires exposed skin, and the skin pores are open during scraping. If exposed to external pathogenic factors such as wind and cold, the pathogenic qi can directly enter the body through the open pores, affecting the efficacy of scraping therapy and easily causing new diseases. Therefore, a good treatment environment should be chosen before scraping, with fresh and well-ventilated air, and attention should be paid to keeping warm and avoiding wind. The skin should be exposed as little as possible.

2. Choose a comfortable body position for scraping to facilitate scraping and prevent dizziness from scraping.

3. The scraping tools should be strictly disinfected to prevent cross-infection. Before scraping, carefully check the scraping tools to avoid scraping the skin.

4. The hands of the practitioner should also be disinfected.

5. Before scraping, it is necessary to explain the general knowledge of scraping to the patient, eliminate their fear, and obtain their cooperation to avoid dizziness from scraping.

6. Do not perform scraping therapy on patients who are excessively hungry, full, or excessively tense.

2. Precautions during Scraping

1. The scraping technique should be applied evenly with appropriate force, according to the patient's tolerance, until petechiae appear.

2. For infants, young children, and the elderly, the scraping technique should be gentler.

3. Do not blindly pursue petechiae and use heavy-handed techniques or prolong the scraping time. The amount of petechiae is influenced by various factors. Generally, blood stasis syndrome produces more petechiae; excess syndrome and heat syndrome produce more petechiae; deficiency syndrome and cold syndrome produce fewer petechiae; patients taking too many medications, especially corticosteroids, are not easy to produce petechiae; obese and muscular individuals are not easy to produce petechiae; Yin meridians are less likely to produce petechiae than Yang meridians; petechiae are less likely to occur when the room temperature is low.

4. During scraping, frequently ask the patient about their feelings. If dizziness occurs, such as mental fatigue, dizziness, pale complexion, nausea, cold sweat, palpitations, cold limbs, or decreased blood pressure and unconsciousness, scraping should be stopped immediately. Comfort the patient and avoid tension, help them lie down, keep warm, and drink warm water or sugar water. If the symptoms do not improve, press the water groove points with the corners of the scraping board, with gentle force to avoid edema after pressing. Use the purging scraping technique on Baihui and Yongquan points. After the patient's condition improves, continue to scrape Neiguan and Zusanli points.

3. Precautions after Scraping

1. Scraping therapy promotes sweat and pathogenic qi elimination, which consumes some of the body's fluid. Therefore, after scraping therapy, the patient should drink a cup of warm water and rest for a while.

2. After scraping therapy, in order to prevent invasion by external pathogenic factors, the skin pores should be closed and restored to their original state before bathing, generally about 3 hours.

3. For patients with complex and critical conditions, in addition to scraping therapy, other treatments should be used in conjunction, such as medication, to avoid delaying the condition.

Causes and Pathogenesis of Myopia

In adolescence, myopia is mainly related to factors such as insufficient lighting and poor reading and writing posture, in addition to some genetic factors.

In traditional Chinese medicine, myopia is caused by insufficient liver and kidney, weak qi and blood, and the inability of the essence and qi of the five organs to reach the eyes.

1. Insufficient heart yin: The heart governs blood vessels and contains the sovereign fire. When the heart yang is weak, the eyes lose warmth and the spirit cannot extend to a distance.

2. Weak spleen and weak qi: The spleen governs transportation and blood, and is the source of qi and blood production. When the spleen loses its healthy function, the source of transformation is insufficient, which affects the ascending and clearing functions.

3. Deficiency of liver and kidney: The liver stores blood and opens to the eyes. The eyes can see with the nourishment of blood, and the kidneys store essence, which generates marrow. Prolonged vision strain or excessive labor can damage the eyes, leading to loss of nourishment.

Methods to Improve Myopia

1. Breathing Technique

After using the eyes for a long time, we should take a break, relax our body and mind, and look straight ahead with both eyes open. Slowly inhale while opening the eyes wide, then exhale slowly and close the eyes slowly.

Repeat this several times, each time lasting 20 to 30 seconds.

2. Eye Rotation Technique

Before going to bed, let your tired eyes relax fully. First, let your eyes look at your chin for 5 seconds, then rotate the eyeballs clockwise 20 times, then rotate them counterclockwise for another 20 times. A total of 40 rotations, repeated for 3-5 sets.

You can do the first set with your eyes closed and the second set with your eyes open, alternating between the two. It is important to exert as much force as possible when rotating the eyeballs.

This exercise can strengthen the eye muscles and make the eyes focused and energetic.

3. Distant Gazing Technique

Green is a protective color for the eyes because its wavelength is shorter and it can relax the eye muscles and reduce fatigue. Therefore, it is best to choose green patterns as the background color for electronic devices. When we feel eye fatigue, we can choose a green plant to focus on for 20 seconds, trying not to blink or squint.

Then, choose a green plant closer to us and gaze at it for 20 seconds, alternating between the two for 10 cycles. This is very beneficial for our eyes.

4. Hot Compress Technique

Before washing the face at night, gently apply a hot towel on the eyes, as the heat can promote blood circulation in the eyes.

Note: Do not make the towel too hot to avoid burning the skin.

5. Massage Technique

First, close both eyes naturally, then gently massage the acupoints around the eyes: around the eye sockets, Taiyang, Yuyao, Sibai, Fengchi. The acupoints should be accurately selected, and the technique should be gentle and soothing, with moderate soreness and swelling in the local area.

This has the effect of dredging meridians, harmonizing qi and blood, and relieving muscle spasms and tension in the eyes, thus preventing and recovering from myopia.

Daily Care Tips for Myopia

1. Develop correct reading and writing posture for children, with a distance of about 30 cm between the eyes and the book.

2. The lighting should be moderate when reading and writing, not too strong or too dim. The light should come from the front left to avoid shadows from the hand obstructing the line of sight.

3. Reading time should not be too long. Every 40-50 minutes, take a 10-15 minute break, close the eyes or look into the distance for a few minutes, or do eye exercises to prevent excessive eye fatigue.

4. Do not read or write books with small or blurry print, and do not write too small.

5. Educate children to correct unreasonable eye-use habits, such as lying on the table, tilting the head while reading or writing, reading in bed, reading under strong light or dim streetlights or moonlight, and reading while traveling in a moving vehicle or walking. These bad habits can cause excessive eye fatigue and reduce visual acuity.
