The circulation of the Small Intestine Meridian is similar to that of the Large Intestine Meridian, but it is located further back. In terms of function, it is not as extensive as the Large Intestine Meridian. So, what are the functions and benefits of the Small Intestine Meridian?
Treating "liquid"-related diseases
According to "Ling Shu: Meridians and Acupoints," the Small Intestine Meridian is responsible for "diseases related to liquids." "Liquid" includes menstruation, milk, vaginal discharge, semen, and glandular secretions referred to in modern medicine, such as gastric juice, pancreatic juice, prostatic secretions, and synovial fluid. Therefore, for any diseases related to "liquid," solutions can be sought from the Small Intestine Meridian.
Relieving chest tightness and irritability
Some people experience chest tightness and gastric blockage, while others have a quick temper and often feel irritable, leading to frequent arguments. These symptoms can be alleviated by massaging the Small Intestine Meridian and Triple Burner Meridian.
Promoting milk secretion
The Small Intestine Meridian also plays a crucial role in regulating milk secretion in lactating women. If there is insufficient milk production or low milk volume after childbirth, it is usually due to blockages in the Small Intestine Meridian. In addition to nourishing qi and blood, stimulating the relevant acupoints of the Small Intestine Meridian can promote milk secretion.
Relieving muscle fatigue
Massaging along the Small Intestine Meridian can relax the muscles of the upper limbs and promote the smooth flow of meridian qi. It can be used to relieve fatigue and also as a way to relax the body during other massage treatments.
Assisting in the treatment of joint diseases
The Small Intestine Meridian passes through the wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints. Therefore, pressing the acupoints of the Small Intestine Meridian on both sides of the joints can assist in the treatment of joint flexion and extension disorders and soft tissue diseases in the surrounding areas.
How to unblock the Small Intestine Meridian
Sit upright with the arms bent and placed in front of the chest, palms facing the chest. Use kneading technique to massage along the outer edge of the Small Intestine Meridian on the arms, alternating between both hands. Repeat this operation for 8-10 minutes each time. Apply stronger pressure to the areas that feel painful or uncomfortable, but still bearable, and extend the duration of the massage if necessary. When it is difficult to massage the shoulder and back meridians by oneself, you can ask someone else for help or use a massage hammer for tapping.
