Sweat Steaming: Is it Suitable for People Who Don't Sweat?

November 8, 2023

Sweating is a good way to maintain good health. During sweating, the body usually produces a lot of sweat. However, some people do not sweat much in their daily lives. Can people who do not sweat undergo sweat steaming?

Can people who do not sweat undergo sweat steaming?

It is not recommended for people who do not sweat to undergo sweat steaming.

If a person does not sweat after exercising or in a hot environment, and does not sweat during sweat steaming, it is not recommended to undergo sweat steaming. This is because not sweating may be caused by a medical condition or a cold body constitution. In both cases, sweat steaming may have adverse effects on the body, such as heat stroke.

Why is it not advisable for people who do not sweat to undergo sweat steaming?

1. Unable to achieve the purpose of sweat steaming

Many people go to sweat steaming rooms because sweat steaming can open the pores, promote blood circulation, and expel rheumatism and cold toxins from the body through sweating. However, if a person does not sweat during sweat steaming, it is impossible to eliminate the damp and cold air in the body, making sweat steaming unnecessary.

2. Prone to heat stroke

The temperature in the sweat steaming room is generally high. When sweating during sweat steaming, the body's heat is reduced. However, if a person who does not sweat undergoes sweat steaming, the body's heat cannot dissipate, and it is likely to develop symptoms of heat stroke.

Why do some people not sweat?

1. Cold body constitution

People who do not sweat easily generally have a cold body constitution. Normally, the skin produces sweat in a high-temperature environment, but people with a cold body constitution do not easily sweat even in a high-temperature environment. They may even feel cold in their hands and feet.

A cold body constitution is often caused by excessive innate internal Yin Qi, which leads to imbalance between Yin and Yang. In addition, staying up late, regularly consuming cold drinks, and inadequate nutrition can also cause a cold body constitution.

2. Abnormal sweat glands

Some people sweat less due to underdeveloped sweat glands or a lack of sweat glands, which can manifest as generalized or localized anhidrosis.

3. Skin diseases

Some patients with reduced sweating may be caused by specific skin diseases, such as severe ichthyosis, scleroderma, leprosy, radiation dermatitis, and skin atrophy, which can cause localized anhidrosis.

4. Nerve damage

Nerve damage can also cause reduced sweating, such as transverse myelitis, poliomyelitis, paralysis, and local damage to the sympathetic nerves, medulla, or pons, which can cause generalized or localized anhidrosis.

5. Internal organ diseases

Some patients with reduced sweating may have underlying internal organ diseases, such as diabetes, diabetes insipidus, chronic nephritis, mucinous edema, malignant tumors, and vitamin A deficiency, which can cause generalized anhidrosis.

6. Dehydration

Some people sweat less not because of a specific disease, but because they have less body water. Therefore, even in a high-temperature environment, they will sweat less than usual.

What should people who do not sweat do?

1. Treat the underlying disease

Currently, there is no specific treatment for primary anhidrosis caused by underdeveloped sweat glands. However, if anhidrosis is caused by other diseases, the primary disease should be actively treated.

2. Artificial cooling

For people with generalized anhidrosis who cannot regulate body temperature in extreme weather conditions and experience extreme discomfort, besides receiving treatment, they can move to a cooler area or use artificial cooling methods, such as installing air conditioning indoors.

3. Reduce physical activity

For people who do not sweat, it is best to reduce physical activity in summer to avoid heat stroke and other conditions caused by overheating of the body. It is also important to replenish a large amount of water in a timely manner. If the lack of sweating causes physical discomfort, it is advisable to go to the hospital for relevant examinations and receive timely and effective treatment.

Why do people not sweat during sweat steaming?

1. Sweat glands have not opened

During the first sweat steaming session, the pores on the face may be clogged due to acne or blackheads, and the sweat glands have not opened yet. As a result, there will be very little sweat or only redness on the face without sweating during sweat steaming.

Solution:

(1) Clean the pores before sweat steaming; (2) Sweat steaming multiple times to open the sweat glands;

After sweating several times, the speed and amount of sweating will increase. Moreover, with the increase in the number of sweat steaming sessions, there will be no odor in the sweat because it has already reached the fat layer. After sweat steaming, the body will feel relaxed, and the skin will feel smooth.

2. Cold body constitution

If sweating is still scarce or absent after frequent sweat steaming, it may be due to insufficient Qi and blood, a cold body constitution, or kidney Yang deficiency. Due to the cold body constitution, blood circulation is often poor, and there are symptoms of coldness in the limbs and aversion to cold.

Solution:

Pay more attention to diet and eat warm-tonifying foods, such as lamb.

Attention! People with kidney deficiency should not have excessively long sweat steaming sessions and should avoid doing it on an empty stomach, as it may cause dizziness.

3. Underdeveloped sweat glands

If a person's sweat glands are naturally underdeveloped or have congenital hypoplastic sweat glands, their metabolism is slower, and they are more heat-tolerant, making it difficult for them to sweat during sweat steaming.

Solution:

(1) Sweat steaming multiple times to regulate metabolism; (2) Drink hot water during sweat steaming to help raise body temperature and promote sweating;

4. Excessive dampness in the body

When there is excessive dampness and coldness in the body, the distribution and volatilization of water are hindered, making it difficult to sweat during sweat steaming. In this case, persisting in sweat steaming can force joint dampness and coldness out of the body, allowing the body to absorb heat and achieve a circulation-regulating effect.

Solution:

(1) Exercise regularly when there is excessive dampness; (2) Eat foods that dispel dampness, such as coix seed and Euryale ferox.

Is it better to sweat more during sweat steaming?

Although sweating is the desired effect of sweat steaming, it does not mean that the more you sweat during sweat steaming, the better.

There is a limit to this. It is easy to faint if it becomes unbearable. It is similar to sauna. If you can't stand it, you should take a break. When you can tolerate it, you can cover yourself again and continue sweating. Sweat should be wiped off immediately to facilitate pore cleansing.

However, within the limits of what the body can tolerate, relatively speaking, sweating more is better. However, during and after sweat steaming, it is important to replenish water in a timely manner. Otherwise, excessive sweating can lead to physical exhaustion, fainting, and other conditions. Therefore, sweat steaming should be done within one's limits, and attention should be paid to timely water replenishment.

Precautions for sweat steaming

1. People with high blood pressure and heart disease should not undergo sweat steaming. The temperature in sweat steaming rooms is typically around 40 degrees Celsius, which is quite dangerous for this group of people and can reach life-threatening levels.

2. Sweat steaming should not be done during menstruation. Women's bodies are already weak during this period, and sweat steaming is a physically demanding activity. If sweat steaming is done during this period, the consequences can be unimaginable.

3. Remember to replenish water before sweat steaming. During sweat steaming, a large amount of sweat is produced. To prevent dehydration during sweat steaming, it is recommended to drink plenty of water, and adding a suitable amount of salt to the water can help maintain stamina.

4. During sweat steaming, it is best not to talk too much. Sweat steaming is already a physically demanding activity, and talking excessively at this time would waste energy and one's vitality. The best practice is to close your eyes and relax.

5. The duration of sweat steaming should not be too long. The optimal duration is generally around 40 minutes, as sweating too little in a short time is ineffective, and sweating too much for too long can lead to dehydration, fainting, and decreased skin elasticity. Therefore, the duration should not exceed 1 hour.

6. Do not enter and exit the sweat steaming room frequently during sweat steaming. Going in and out frequently can cause body fatigue and will not be conducive to the effectiveness of sweat steaming.

7. Do not wear contact lenses during sweat steaming. As we all know, sweating during sweat steaming can cause sweat and bacteria to flow into the eyes, which can easily cause bacterial infection of contact lenses and the cornea.
