Salvia miltiorrhiza is the dried root of Salvia miltiorrhiza or Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as "Southern Salvia". It is sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature, and belongs to the lung and stomach meridians, and is effective in nourishing Yin and clearing the lung, benefiting the stomach and generating fluid, resolving phlegm and benefiting Qi.

Nourishing Yin and moistening the lung

It can be used to treat Yin deficiency cough, dry cough with lung heat, dry cough with little phlegm, dry throat, hoarseness or coughing up blood, etc. Because of its sweet and slightly cold nature, salvia can nourish lung yin, moisten lung dryness and clear lung heat. Since saxifrage also has the function of dissolving phlegm, it can also be used to treat dry lung cough with sticky phlegm that cannot be easily coughed out.

Benefiting the stomach and nourishing the body

It can be used to treat dry mouth, dry throat, constipation, vomiting, red tongue and less fluid due to the deficiency of stomach yin and heat. It is especially suitable for those who have deficiency of both qi and yin in the late stage of warm-heat disease and the residual heat has not been cleared.

Suppressing cough and expectorant

The decoction of Salvia miltiorrhiza has an expectorant effect on rabbits, but it is weaker than aster and lasts longer. The β-sitosterol and palmitoyl-β-sitosterol contained in Salvia miltiorrhiza have cough suppressant, expectorant, asthma calming and anti-inflammatory effects, which are also related to the saponins contained.

Immune regulation

Salvia miltiorrhiza can improve cellular and non-specific immunity and suppress humoral immunity of the body. It has the function of regulating immune homeostasis. Shashen aqueous decoction has a very significant promoting effect on macrophage phagocytosis, serum lysozyme level, and delayed hypersensitivity reaction, and also has a significant promoting effect on B cell proliferation but a very significant inhibiting effect on T cells.

Anti-fungal

The aqueous infusion of Salvia miltiorrhiza (1:2) showed different degrees of inhibitory effects on dermatophytes such as S. cerevisiae and S. woolii in the test tube.

Heart-strengthening

The 1% of salvia infusion has obvious cardiotonic effect on the isolated toad heart, which can increase the amplitude of the isolated heart, and can slightly increase the blood pressure and strengthen the respiration when given intravenously to anesthetized rabbits.

Contraindications to the use of Salvia divinorum

It has not only a high medicinal value, but also an obvious therapeutic effect. However, it should be noted that it is not suitable for patients with wind-cold cough, and it should be avoided in the process of use with quinoa to avoid adverse reactions.
