Understanding the Noises: Common Causes of Stomach Rumbling in Middle Age

February 13, 2024

As we reach middle age, our bodies start experiencing various problems that we cannot ignore. Sometimes we may hear our stomachs making inexplicable noises. What could be the reason for this?

The normal range of bowel sounds is 3-5 times per minute. If the sounds exceed 5 times and are audible to the ear, it is likely an indication of hyperactive bowel sounds.

1. Hungry stomach alarm: When we are hungry, our brain sends a signal to the stomach, which then secretes digestive juices to promote movement in the intestines. If there is little or no food in the stomach, the gas and fluids in the stomach start playing a song - "growl, growl, growl." In this case, eating something will help alleviate the noise.

2. Excessive intestinal gas: Eating gas-producing foods, eating too quickly, and negative emotions can all cause gas to accumulate in the stomach. When the gas cannot be expelled quickly enough (such as in the case of constipation), a large amount of gas will move along with the intestinal movement, causing the intestines to make noises. This condition is often accompanied by symptoms such as constipation, bloating, and abdominal pain.

3. Poor digestion: When digestion is weakened and the motility of the stomach is reduced, it can lead to delayed gastric emptying. This causes food to stay in the stomach for a longer period, allowing the gut flora to interact with the food, resulting in fermentation and the production of large amounts of acid and gas. This leads to bloating and audible noises in the stomach.

4. Diarrhea: Diarrhea is often associated with gastrointestinal diseases. It can be caused by gastrointestinal disorders or consuming contaminated food, which disrupts the digestive function of the intestines and stomach. When the gastrointestinal function is impaired, excessive gas and water can be produced.

5. Other gastrointestinal diseases: Gastrointestinal diseases such as acute gastritis, acute enteritis, and intestinal obstruction can also cause loud bowel sounds. If accompanied by symptoms such as bloody stools and abdominal pain, medical attention should be sought promptly.

It could be caused by excessive water intake or a disruption in digestive function. If there is no abdominal pain or bloating, there is no need to worry too much. Eating more fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins A and B or reducing water intake can help improve the situation.

If there is mild abdominal pain or bloating, consuming fruits and vegetables that aid in digestion or taking medication can be helpful.
