Are Grapes Acidic or Alkaline: The Alkaline Nature of Grapes and Their Health Benefits

October 27, 2023

Grapes are a variety of grape, which are sour and sweet, with thin skin and lots of flesh. They are also known as the "king of grapes". Do you know if grapes are acidic or alkaline?

Grapes are alkaline foods

Grapes belong to the category of alkaline foods, with an alkalinity of 2.3. In every 100 grams of grapes, a large portion is made up of trace elements such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, iron, zinc, and potassium. After entering the body, these trace elements are oxidized and decomposed into organic salts and gases. The inorganic salts are soluble substances and become alkaline substances, which can neutralize acidic substances and maintain the normal acid-base balance of the body fluids.

Benefits of eating grapes

1. Relieve hypoglycemia: Grapes mainly contain glucose, and a cup of grape juice can effectively relieve symptoms of hypoglycemia.

2. Delay aging: Grapes contain flavonoids, which can fight aging, remove free radicals in the body, and have a beautifying effect.

3. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory: Grapes contain natural polyphenols, which can combine with proteins in viruses or bacteria, making them lose the ability to cause infectious diseases and have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

4. Prevent cardiovascular diseases: The substances such as anthocyanins, tannins, and resveratrol in grapes have certain effects in reducing blood pressure, anti-thrombosis, protecting the cardiovascular system, and preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

How to determine the acidity or alkalinity of food

Determining the acidity or alkalinity of food is not based on its taste, but on the acidity or alkalinity of the substances produced after its metabolism in the body. Foods that produce acidic substances after metabolism are acidic foods, while those that produce alkaline substances are alkaline foods.

There are eight minerals closely related to the acidity or alkalinity of human food, namely potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, phosphorus, chlorine, and sulfur. The first five become alkaline substances after entering the body, while the last three become acidic substances.

Examples of alkaline foods

The alkaline substances in the body's metabolic products come mainly from food, such as egg whites, soybeans, red beans, tofu, spinach, cucumber, eggplant, carrots, lotus root, onions, sweet potatoes, potatoes, kelp, grapes, bananas, apples, oranges, pears, watermelons, garlic, and tea. Generally speaking, most vegetables and fruits are alkaline foods.

Examples of acidic foods

Acidic foods are rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, and their metabolic products in the body are acidic substances. Examples include pork, beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, egg yolks, rice, barley, wheat, brown rice, and seaweed. Among fruits, plums, walnuts, and plums are also acidic foods.
