One summer, when I didn't cover my blanket, I found that it had become moldy. It was a shame to throw it away. Is there any way to remove the mold? Let me tell you how to wash a moldy blanket.
What to do with a moldy blanket
After discovering a moldy smell on the blanket, the first step is to remove the cover and put the blanket under the sun to air it out. You can gently tap the blanket with a stick to remove the moldy smell. Clean the cover and let it dry under the sun to remove any odor. The ultraviolet rays from the sun can effectively kill mold. Tapping the blanket with a stick can help remove the mold. If the blanket is heavily contaminated with mold, it is recommended to replace it with a cotton blanket.
How to clean mold stains on the cover
1. Soak the blanket in rice water overnight, then wash it as usual. The mold stains will be removed.
2. Use a soft brush to scrub the mold stains on the cover, then wipe them with alcohol. The mold stains will be removed.
3. Rub the mold stains with green bean sprouts, rinse with clean water, and the stains will be removed.
4. If the mold stains are difficult to clean, you can wipe them with a solution of bleach powder or 35-60°C hot hydrogen peroxide, then rinse with water.
5. For cotton or linen covers with mold stains, soak them in a diluted solution of 20ml ammonia water in 1 liter of water, then rinse with water. For silk or wool covers, use a cotton ball dipped in turpentine to scrub the stains, then air dry under the sun.
Causes of blanket mold
1. Storing the blanket in a damp and warm place, where the blanket absorbs moisture and provides a breeding ground for mold and insect eggs.
2. Storing the blanket without airing it out first. When we sleep at night, we sweat, and there is moisture in the air. The blanket absorbs moisture continuously. If it is stored without being dried, it can lead to mold growth.
How to prevent blanket mold
1. Before storing the blanket, wash and air it out. Avoid prolonged airing and wait for the heat to dissipate before storing it, to prevent moisture accumulation.
2. It is best to use a cotton or linen bag or blanket storage bag that is both dust-proof and breathable. Non-breathable packaging bags can cause mold to grow on the blanket.
3. When storing the blanket, do not place any dehumidifiers or camphor tablets inside the storage bag. These items should be placed in the cabinet where the blanket is stored. The blanket should be placed on top of the wardrobe, without any clothing on top, to prevent the blanket from losing its elasticity and reducing its insulation.
