How to bruise your arm when you have blood drawn

May 12, 2023
It is normal to leave pinhole scars on the arm after a shot or blood draw, but some people leave large bruises on the arm after a blood draw, and some even swell, what is going on? What should I do if my arm is pregnant from a blood draw?

Causes of bruises on the arm from blood draws

Wrong pressure

When blood is drawn the needle is stuck into the skin with an inclination of 30 degrees, which means that the pinhole of the skin and the pinhole of the blood vessel are not in the same position, often there is a gap of 2~3mm, therefore, when pressing the pinhole you need to be a little bit on the upper side and press for a longer time, otherwise the skin pinhole will heal and the blood vessel wound will not heal and blood will flow into the tissue fluid and bruising will occur.

How to bruise your arm after blood draw

Apply ice first

If the bruise appears after the blood draw, which means that the pinhole on the skin has healed, but the pinhole on the blood vessel has not yet healed, you can wrap some ice cubes in a towel and put it on the bruise location first. The low temperature can promote vascular contraction, accelerate the healing of the pinhole, reduce the excessive inflow of blood into the tissue fluid, and also reduce the temperature and swelling.

Re-heat compress

If the bruise does not subside 3 days after the blood is drawn, you can use a warm wet towel or hot egg to apply a hot compress. The increased local temperature can promote capillary expansion and enhance the absorption capacity of capillaries, supplemented by light massage, which can activate blood circulation and eliminate bruises.

How to prevent bruising after blood draw

Good pressure after blood draw

After the blood is drawn, use iodine swabs to press on the skin a few millimeters above the pinhole, the pressure should be as strong as the skin is deep, and the pressure should last 5-15 minutes.

How to care for the wound after blood sampling

1. Good pressure is needed after blood sampling. If the needle hole is large, a band-aid should also be applied to avoid wound infection. 2. The wound is just healing after the blood draw, so it should not be touched or kneaded and patted to avoid the vascular wound from cracking, causing internal bleeding and bruising. 3. It is best not to take a shower or bath for 1 to 2 days after the blood draw, and not to wash the needle hole with a hot towel to avoid subcutaneous bleeding and bruising caused by vasodilation.
