Hand, foot and mouth disease at home how to disinfect these measures to protect you and your baby's health

April 18, 2023
Children under 5 years old are susceptible to HFMD, and they will get it a second time if they get it once, so parents have to disinfect their children's homes after they have recovered from HFMD, so how do you disinfect your home from HFMD?

Disinfection of tableware

Tableware used by children with HFMD at home should be disinfected by boiling for 20 minutes or soaking in a 250 mg/l solution of chlorine disinfectant for 30 minutes.

Disinfection of household items and toys

Household items and toys used by HFMD babies should also be disinfected, either by boiling for 20 minutes or exposing them to sunlight; or by wiping with a 500 mg/l solution of chlorinated disinfectant for 30 minutes; or by wiping with 0.3% peroxyacetic acid for 1 hour and wiping with water after disinfection. If available, direct irradiation with UV lamp for 30 minutes.

Clothes disinfection

Clothes worn by babies who have had HFMD at home should also be disinfected by boiling them after washing or exposing them to sunlight for 20 minutes, or soaking them in 500 mg/L chlorine disinfectant for 30 minutes and then washing them with water. It is important to note that chlorine disinfectants tend to discolor colored clothing.

Disinfection of excreta

The thin excrement or vomit of children with HFMD also needs to be disinfected to avoid infection. 50 g of bleach can be added per liter; 2 parts of a chlorinated disinfectant solution with a concentration of 50 g/l can be added to 1 part of the feces and mixed for 2 hours. The container holding the diarrhea is soaked with 500 mg/l chlorinated disinfectant for 2 hours.

Other disinfection

1. Disinfection of door handles, beds and other furniture. Disinfection can be done by wiping with 500 mg/l solution of chlorine-containing disinfectant for 30 minutes. 2、Air disinfection. Open windows regularly to keep air circulation indoors, and use ultraviolet light when no one is around if possible. 3、Disinfection of domestic sewage. Use a 50 mg/l solution of chlorine disinfectant for 2 hours. 4、Waste disinfection treatment. Spray with 1 g/l solution of chlorine-containing disinfectant and act for 2 hours.

Isolation measures for children with HFMD

Children with mild disease do not need to be hospitalized, but they do need to be isolated. It is advisable to live at home for treatment and rest to reduce cross-infection; children treated at home should not come into contact with other children. Parents should also pay attention to avoid being infected when taking care of their HFMD babies, and disinfect the baby promptly after touching it. Adults can also be infected with the virus that causes HFMD, but adults have a strong immune system and milder symptoms, and usually only have herpes on their hands and feet without fever, and some even have no symptoms. But these adults can become carriers of the virus that causes HFMD, and it is possible to transmit it to children.

Tips

HFMD enterovirus can be inactivated rapidly at 50°C and is sensitive to UV light and dryness, but the commonly used 75% medical alcohol is not lethal to HFMD virus.
