Should I choose medical abortion or abortion when I have an unplanned pregnancy? Which one is less harmful? You can learn more about it before choosing.

What is a medical abortion?

Medical abortion is the use of medication to degenerate and necrosis the uterine meconium, soften the cervix, and force the embryo out of the body by contraction of the uterus. It is suitable for termination of pregnancy within 49 days (within 49 days from the first day of the last menstrual period) and requires an ultrasound to confirm intrauterine pregnancy and to measure the size of the fetal sac. The whole procedure of medical abortion is a little longer and requires taking the medication at home for 3 days and then going to the hospital to take the medication to open the uterus and then being observed in the hospital for a few hours while the doctor confirms whether the fetal sac is expelled from the body.

What is an abortion?

Abortion includes negative pressure aspiration and curettage; it is a method in which the doctor uses an instrument to enter the uterine cavity to terminate the pregnancy by suction or curettage. At present, the most commonly used methods are: visual painless abortion, microtube painless abortion, and double-chamber decompression painless abortion, which are suitable for early pregnancies within 3 months. Especially for those who are 1.5 months to 2 months pregnant.

Advantages and disadvantages of medical abortion

Advantages: no surgery, no instrument enters the uterus, little damage to the uterine lining. Disadvantages: Longer vaginal bleeding time, 14-15 days on average; not always clean, only about 85% success rate. It can have the possibility of heavy bleeding, residuals and re-scraping, so it is not preferred.

Advantages and disadvantages of abortion

Advantages: Painless abortion uses intravenous anesthesia, which leads to rapid sleep, less pain and shorter operation time. Disadvantages: There are complications such as uterine perforation, missed suction, incomplete suction, etc. If the operation is not done properly, the endometrium will be damaged. There is also the risk of anesthesia accidents, such as: cardiac and respiratory arrest.

Which is less harmful

Both abortion and medical abortion are more harmful to women and can disturb the endocrine balance of the body, resulting in menstrual disorders or amenorrhea. The specific abortion method needs to be chosen by the doctor after examination, according to the time of pregnancy, the size of the gestational sac, the condition of the uterus, and the individual's physical condition. Medical abortion is less harmful, but less successful than abortion, and there may be residues that need to be scraped again, which is also harmful to the uterine wall. Painless abortion has a relatively high success rate, fast time, and the entire procedure is performed under visualization, which provides favorable conditions for the safe performance of the procedure, and women with unplanned pregnancies can consider painless abortion.

Tips

Regardless of which method you choose, it should be performed in a regular hospital (it is stipulated that only hospitals of grade IIA or above are qualified to perform this type of surgery), never in small clinics that are not qualified to practice, or take medication on their own, otherwise it may cause serious consequences such as hemorrhage and infertility.
