In order to be effective, sports drinks usually include substances such as carbohydrates for energy and electrolytes such as sodium for salt. Although most of the ingredients are good for sports, if you drink too much, it will also cause a burden on the body, and in serious cases, it may lead to various diseases. Don't drink too many sports drinks! The negative effects are more than you can imagine, so what are the negative effects of drinking too many sports drinks?

Taking in too many calories

After an hour of exercise, you need to replenish your carbohydrates to provide nutrients to repair your muscles. The carbohydrates in sports drinks can help you achieve this goal, such as glucose, sucrose and fructose, but beware, these ingredients also carry a lot of calories. Each sports drink typically contains 60 to 80 calories of carbohydrates. Check the nutrition facts label on the sports drink bottle carefully, as each item has a different carbohydrate content. If you drink more carbohydrates than your body needs, these carbohydrates will turn into fat and be stored in your body.

Affects blood sugar balance

The carbohydrates in sports drinks can cause another problem: they have a high glycemic index, which means they can cause a significant rise in blood sugar. If you are healthy, your body will automatically adjust to normal blood sugar levels after drinking the right amount of sports drinks. But if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic, drinking too many sports drinks can affect the maintenance of blood sugar levels.

Excess sodium

Sodium is an electrolyte that regulates the amount of blood in your body and helps maintain the normal functioning of your muscles, nerves and heart. When you sweat, sodium is excreted with your sweat, so when you sweat a lot, you may need to drink a sports drink to replenish your sodium quickly. However, too much sodium in sports drinks may raise your blood pressure. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, commercially available sports drinks may contain as much as 252 mg of sodium in just one cup, a figure that alone represents 17 percent of the 1,500 mg daily sodium intake recommended by the National Academy of Medicine. Also, avoid eating too much processed food on the day you consume a sports drink, as most of these foods contain a lot of sodium and can easily make you exceed your daily sodium intake.

Causes tooth decay

Some brands of sports drinks add citric acid to add flavor. You may be surprised to find that some brands of sports drinks even have a pH value between 3 and 4, which is already about the same as the acidity of table vinegar. The biggest problem with the citric acid in these sports drinks is that it can erode the enamel layer of your teeth and lead to tooth decay if you drink too much of it.
