What to eat for diabetes in the elderly

April 6, 2023
The treatment of diabetes in the elderly needs to focus first on dietary therapy, and controlling the diet is the basis of diabetes treatment. So what is good for elderly people with diabetes to eat? Diabetic patients should control the diet, but also to ensure adequate nutrition, and to follow the diet, lifestyle habits to regulate.

Cinnamon

Elderly diabetics eat a spoonful of cinnamon every day to enable the body to better convert blood sugar into capacity. After consuming cinnamon extract for a sustained period of forty days, patients will experience a less pronounced increase in blood sugar after eating and a significant improvement in heart health.

Citrus

Older diabetics have low vitamin levels in their bodies, and while taking vitamin C can be a good supplement, citrus is low in fat and rich in fiber, making it a better source of vitamin C.

Deep-sea fish

Older diabetics are twice as likely to have heart disease as the general population, so eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as deep-sea fish, can help them lower their bad cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

High-fiber foods

Elderly diabetics can significantly lower their blood sugar levels if they increase their daily fiber intake from 24 grams to 50 grams. Patients also do not need to take the trouble to calculate the fiber content of different foods, just eat more fruits, vegetables, legumes, brown rice and coarse grains.

Bean pod foods

The fiber in the food slows down the rate of glucose entering the bloodstream and stops the peak of blood sugar, which can effectively reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease.

Green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and kale are rich in lutein, fiber, vitamin B, vitamin C, iron and calcium, which can effectively protect against eye complications of diabetes.

Green tea

Studies have found that diabetic seniors have chronic inflammation due to frequent high-fat foods, lack of exercise, and low fruit intake, which can increase the risk of heart disease and affect the body's ability to use blood sugar. Green tea is rich in flavonoids, which can play an anti-inflammatory role.

Dark chocolate

Studies have shown that dark chocolate can prevent the treatment of type 2 diabetes to a certain extent, but also significantly lower blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol in the body and improve blood vessel function.
