The dried roots are cylindrical and slightly curved, some with branches, measuring 15-30 centimeters in length and 0.6-1.5 centimeters in thickness.

The surface is grayish-brown or brownish-brown. The top of the root often has residual stems, and there are annular leaf scars. The root has longitudinal wrinkles, clustered wart-like protrusions, and root marks.

It is light in weight, hard and brittle in texture, with a pale yellow-white cross-section, without flesh, and mostly fibrous. It has a slight smell and a spicy taste. It is best to use dried, without fine tail roots. This product is used as Fang Feng in Sichuan.

1. Fang Feng can treat tetanus, with the effect of dispelling wind and stopping spasm, but it is often used in combination with Tian Nan Xing, Tian Ma, Bai Fu Zi, and other medicines.

2. Fang Feng can dispel wind and relieve surface, both dispersing wind-cold and dissipating wind-heat. Its action is similar to Jing Jie, so the two herbs are often used together.

3. Fang Feng can dispel wind and dampness, and relieve pain. It is often used in combination with Qiang Huo, Fang Ji, and other herbs to treat rheumatic pain and other conditions.

4. Fang Feng has hemostatic and antidiarrheal effects. When used for abdominal pain and diarrhea, it is often used in combination with Bai Shao, Bai Zhu, Chen Pi, and other herbs. If used for rectal bleeding or excessive uterine bleeding, it is generally applied after frying with charcoal.
