Passion Fruit: The Sweet and Sour Delight

Passion Fruit, also known as "Xintongzi", "Rudilong", "Suantengzi", and "Tiansuan Ye", belongs to the Passifloraceae family. It is distributed in southern regions of China, such as Yunnan, Guangxi, and Hainan. The fruit is mainly harvested in summer and has a sweet and sour taste, making it edible!


Passion fruit is spherical or elliptical, with a diameter of 3-8mm. The surface is green-brown or gray-purple and often wrinkled. The top has a remnant of the stigma, and the bottom is often attached to a 2-5mm long pedicel and small sepals.

The fruit peel is crispy and easy to peel off. The seed is often covered with a brown seed coat, and the kernel is hard with a yellow-white horny appearance. On the outer side, there are patterns of seed coat embedded in the endosperm. It has a mild aroma, a mild taste, and a spicy and numbing sensation when chewed for a long time.

The berry is round and becomes red or purple-black when ripe. When dried, it turns dark brown and has a diameter of 5-6mm. It is smooth, with longitudinal wrinkled stripes and a few glandular spots. It has a mild aroma and a sour and sweet taste.
