Bai Fu Zi is a perennial herb with tall plants. The underground tubers resemble taro, ovate to elliptic-ovate in shape, covered with dark brown scales. The leaves are 1-7 (depending on the age); the leaf stalks are fleshy and enlarged, often with pale pink or purple stripes, up to 40cm long;
The leaf blades are triangular-ovate, lanceolate or broadly oval, 10-40cm long and 7-30cm wide. They initially curl inward like horns and then unfold, gradually tapering at the tip.
The flower stalks emerge from the tubers, green with red speckles; the bracts are purplish red, cylindrical or long ovate in shape, gradually tapering and curving at the top, and the lobes are oval, up to 15cm long; the racemes are located inside the bracts and are about 14cm long;
The female and bisexual racemes are about 3cm long, and the male raceme is about 2cm long; the appendages are cylindrical, upright, about 6cm long, purple in color, and do not extend beyond the bracts; the male flowers are golden yellow, with 2 anthers and cracked anther chambers; the bisexual flowers are linear, drooping, and pale yellow; the female flowers are reddish brown.
