[Botanical Characteristics of Ganban Gui]

Ganban Gui is a perennial herbaceous plant. The stem is ridged and reddish-brown, with downward-pointing hooks.

The leaves are alternate, shield-shaped, with leaf blades nearly triangular, measuring 4-6 cm long and 5-8 cm wide. The tips are pointed, and the base is nearly heart-shaped or truncate. The lower surface of the leaves has sparse hooked thorns along the veins. The leaf sheath is nearly circular and clasps the stem. The leaf stalk is long and sparsely covered in downward-pointing hooks.

The inflorescence is a short spike, with round bracts. The corolla is deeply divided into 5 petals, pale pink or white. As it matures, it enlarges, becomes fleshy, and turns deep blue. The plant has 8 stamens and a 3-cleft pistil. The fruit is a spherical achene enclosed within the fleshy, blue perianth. The flowering period is from June to August, and the fruiting period is from September to October.
