Clinical Applications and Benefits of Shuochen: Clearing Heat, Detoxifying, and Relieving Pain

February 15, 2024

Shuochen is a traditional Chinese medicine that has the functions of clearing heat, detoxifying, dispelling wind and dampness, promoting blood circulation, relieving pain, and regulating the menstrual cycle and bone alignment. It can be used to treat various inflammatory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, lower back and leg pain, tumors, bruises, fractures, and more. Let's learn about the clinical application methods of Shuochen below!

1. Treatment of acute bacterial dysentery

Inject 2 ml of 100% Shuochen injection into the muscle every 6 hours, and then switch to twice daily injections of 2 ml each after 3 to 4 days. Stop the medication when the stool returns to normal.

Out of 57 cases treated, 53 were cured and 4 were ineffective. The average time for normal stool observation was 4.9 days, normal microscopic examination was 5.6 days, and negative culture was 5.9 days.

2. Treatment of acute suppurative tonsillitis

Inject 2 ml of 100% Shuochen injection into the muscle twice daily. All 20 cases were cured, with an average treatment time of 3 days.

3. Treatment of pneumonia

Inject 2 ml of 100% Shuochen injection into the muscle for children under 2 years old, 3 ml for children aged 3 to 4, and 4 ml for children over 4, twice daily. Stop the medication 3 to 5 days after the body temperature returns to normal.

Out of 16 cases treated, 12 were cured, with complete disappearance of clinical symptoms and absorption of inflammatory lesions in chest X-ray examination. One case showed improvement in clinical symptoms and signs, with partial absorption of inflammatory lesions in chest X-ray examination. Three cases were ineffective.

4. Treatment of chronic bronchitis

Take 4 liang of fresh Stellaria dichotoma stems and leaves, boil them in water for about 1 hour, and take in divided doses 3 times a day. One course of treatment lasts for 10 days.

Out of 183 cases treated, after three courses of treatment, the short-term control rate was 26.7%, the significant effect rate was 33.8%, the improvement rate was 30.6%, and the ineffective rate was 8.9%. According to observation, there was no significant difference in efficacy based on different types of bronchitis, but the significant effect rate was significantly higher in the asthmatic type compared to the simple type. It also had a certain therapeutic effect on patients with concurrent pulmonary emphysema.

Shuochen can relieve bronchial smooth muscle spasm, so it has a better bronchodilator effect. It also has a certain antitussive and expectorant effect, but its anti-inflammatory effect is relatively poor and its therapeutic effect is not well consolidated. The onset of action is also relatively slow.

During the treatment, two cases experienced mild dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain after taking the medication, and one case developed allergic purpura. In addition, nasal drops of Stellaria dichotoma and oral administration of Stellaria oil capsules also showed certain short-term efficacy.

5. Use for pain relief

Fill the whole herb powder of Polygonum hydropiper in capsules, with each capsule containing 0.3 grams. Take 2 capsules when experiencing pain. In 100 cases of postoperative incision pain, toothache, abdominal pain, etc., 92 cases showed significant reduction or disappearance of pain within 15 to 30 minutes after taking the medication, with an effective rate of 92%.

6. Treatment of fractures

Take the dried roots of Codonopsis pilosula, wash and dry them, grind them into fine powder, and mix with a small amount of flour (4:1). Mix with white wine to make a paste, spread it on gauze, and apply it to the fracture site. Then fix it with a splint. Change the dressing once every 5 to 10 days, and apply white wine once every other day to enhance the medicinal effect.

Regular X-ray examinations are performed, and traction is generally not used simultaneously. Elevate the affected limb in the early stage and perform voluntary muscle contraction exercises to promote edema reduction. Afterward, appropriate activities are carried out to promote functional recovery. Forty-five cases of closed fractures in various parts were treated, with an average healing time of 33 to 48 days.

The therapeutic principle of Shuochen seems to be as follows: After external application of Codonopsis pilosula, it first causes vasoconstriction, which can cause contraction of capillary smooth muscle cells, reducing or preventing blood from flowing from long-flowing capillaries to the venous plexus capillaries. As a result, the pressure in the venous plexus capillaries decreases, making it easier for tissue edema fluid to be absorbed.

At the same time, due to vasoconstriction, the blood flow in the long-flowing capillaries increases, which can create a negative pressure-like suction effect at the junction between the distal end of the long-flowing capillaries and the venous plexus capillaries, further reducing the pressure in the venous plexus capillaries and facilitating the absorption of exudates.

Because of the formation of this benign circulation, venous reflux obstruction in the traumatic inflammatory area can be quickly relieved, soft tissue swelling can be rapidly reduced, and pain can also be reduced, which is beneficial for fracture healing.

In addition, injecting 2 ml of 100% Shuochen injection into the muscle twice daily has a good effect on multiple boils.
