Chuan Fang Feng: Application Methods and Identification

Chuan Fang Feng, also known as Bamboo Joint Fang Feng, Mao Qian Hu, or Xi Feng, is the root of the plant Short-split Stilbene in the family Umbelliferae. Application Methods of Chuan Fang Feng

1. Fang Feng is used to treat tetanus and has the effect of dispelling wind and stopping spasms, but it is often used in combination with Tian Nan Xing, Tian Ma, and Bai Fu Zi.

2. Fang Feng is primarily used for expelling wind and treating exterior conditions. It can dispel wind-cold and wind-heat, similar to Jing Jie. Therefore, these two herbs are often used together.

3. Fang Feng can dispel wind and dampness and relieve pain. It is often used in combination with Qiang Huo, Fang Ji, and other herbs to treat wind-dampness and pain.

4. Fang Feng has hemostatic and antidiarrheal effects. It is often used in combination with Bai Shao, Bai Zhu, and Chen Pi to treat abdominal pain and diarrhea. It is also used for bleeding and metrorrhagia, usually in charred form.


Identification of Chuan Fang Feng

The dried root is cylindrical and slightly curved, with some branches. It is 15-30 cm long and 0.6-1.5 cm thick. The surface is gray-brown or brownish-brown.

The top of the root often has residual stem and leaf scars. The root has longitudinal wrinkles, clustered wart-like protrusions, and supporting root marks.

It is light in weight, hard and brittle, with a pale yellow-white cross-section and no fleshy texture. It is mostly fibrous. It has a slight aroma and a spicy taste. It is best to use dried roots without fine tail roots. This herb is commonly used as Fang Feng in Sichuan.


Contraindications of Chuan Fang Feng

1. It should not be used in cases of deficient yin and heat-induced wind.

2. It should be avoided in cases of deficient blood and spasms or headaches unrelated to wind pathogens.

3. It is incompatible with Gan Jiang, Li Lu, Bai Xian Pi, and Yuan Hua.

4. It should not be used in cases of deficient vitality and diseases unrelated to wind and dampness.
