Qian Shi (Euryale Ferox): A Youth-Enhancing Herb with Medicinal Benefits

Qian Shi (Euryale Ferox), an annual large aquatic herb. It tonifies the middle and benefits qi, nourishes the kidneys and consolidates essence, and eliminates dampness and stops leucorrhea. In China, it has been used since ancient times as a good substance to maintain youthful vitality and prevent premature aging. At the same time, it has high medicinal value. It is not suitable for people with urinary and bowel disorders, and caution should be exercised for those with indigestion.

 

 

 

Processing:

 

  1. Stir-frying: Take clean Qian Shi and place it in a pot. Heat it over low heat until it turns slightly yellow. Remove it, let it cool, and store it.

 

  2. Bran processing: First, stir-fry the bran in a hot pot until smoke rises. Then pour the clean Qian Shi into the pot and stir-fry until it turns slightly yellow. Remove it, sift out the bran, and let it cool. For every 100kg of Qian Shi, use 10kg of bran.

 

  3. Earth processing: Take Fulonggan powder and place it in a pot. Heat it over low heat until it becomes loose. Add the clean Qian Shi and stir-fry until it turns slightly yellow. Remove it, sift out the Fulonggan powder, and let it cool. For every 100kg of clean Qian Shi, use 20kg of Fulonggan powder.

 

  4. Salt processing: Soak the Qian Shi in saltwater for one night and then steam it until cooked. For every 10kg of Qian Shi, use 120g of salt and an appropriate amount of water. Note: When using Qian Shi, steam it until cooked, and then expose it to the sun to crack open and collect the kernel. It can also be used to make flour in spring.

 

Effects of Qian Shi:

 

  Tonifies the kidneys and secures essence, strengthens the spleen and stops diarrhea. It is used to treat spermatorrhea, turbid discharge, excessive urination, and diarrhea.

 

Functions of Qian Shi:

 

  ① Treats nocturnal emission with dreams: Take minced chicken head meat, minced lotus flower stamen, ground dragon bone, and powdered dried plum, each weighing one liang. Cooked yam paste is made into pills the size of a chicken head. Take one pill per dose with warm wine or salt soup on an empty stomach. (Yang Family Collection of Formulas, Yu Suo Dan)

  

  ② Treats excessive slippery discharge: Take fried San Yuan Jili, steamed Qian Shi, and dried lotus stamen, each weighing two liang, roasted dragon bone, and powdered oyster (boiled in saltwater for one day and one night, then powdered), each weighing one liang. Grind them together into a powder, make into pills with lotus seed paste, and take with salt soup. (Yi Fang Ji Jie, Jin Suo Gu Jing Wan)

  

  ③ Treats turbid diseases: Take Qian Shi powder and white Poria powder. Mix with melted yellow wax and honey to make pills the size of a wutong seed. Take one hundred pills per dose with salt soup. (Zhai Yuan Fang, Fen Qing Wan)

  

  ④ Treats spleen and kidney deficiency heat in the elderly and children, as well as chronic diarrhea: Take Qian Shi, yam, Poria, white Atractylodes, lotus meat, coix seed, and white hyacinth bean, each weighing four liang, and ginseng, weighing one liang. Stir-fry them all to dryness, grind them into a powder, and take with white soup. (Fang Mai Zheng Zong)

  

  ⑤ Treats frequent urination and nocturnal emission: Take two liang each of Qiushi, white Poria, Qian Shi, and lotus seeds, and grind them together into a powder. Add steamed jujube to make pills the size of a wutong seed. Take thirty pills per dose on an empty stomach, and take with salt soup. This formula is called "Si Jing Wan" (Four Essence Pills).

  

  ⑥ Treats turbid diseases: Take Qian Shi powder and white Poria powder. Mix with melted yellow wax and honey to make pills the size of a wutong seed. Take one hundred pills per dose with salt soup. This formula is called "Fen Qing Wan" (Clearing Particles Pills).
