Chinese herbal medicine Mulianguo, is the fruit of the orchid family plant Muliang, with the effects of promoting bowel movements and stopping cough. Mulianguo can be used for damp-heat constipation, as well as coughing in the elderly.

Mulianguo is native to China and there are also plant varieties in China. It is a plant of the orchid species, different from the aquatic lily species, and can be a choice for urban green belts.
Muliang flowers are mainly distributed in Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places. The original place of origin is Fujian, China. Nowadays, it is also introduced by many countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, and it is spread all over the world. However, the variety of Muliang is relatively single, with little possibility of variation and a slightly difficult reproduction, thus not suitable for large-scale cultivation.

The first good variety of Muliang in Fujian Province was actually collected from Hong Kong and then became popular.
Among the Muliang varieties grown in China, the most similar one is Hainan Muliang. Although they are different varieties, their flowering and fruiting periods are similar, and there is no significant difference in tree shape, only the color of the flowers is different.
The flowers of Hainan Muliang have a brown color, while the traditional Muliang flowers are pure white, including the flower stem and pistil, and the central part of the flower will have a leaf margin of more than 1 millimeter.
The fruit of Mulianguo is formed by the aggregation of numerous small fruits, resembling pine cones, about 4cm long and 3-4cm in diameter, with a swollen base.
Peel off the seed coat, there is a grayish-white and oily cotyledon, with a fragrant smell and a mild taste. It is best to have dried and intact Mulianguo without breaking.
In summary, the flowers of traditional Muliang are slightly larger and pure white, while the flowers of Hainan Muliang are slightly smaller and have a hint of brown.
