In traditional Chinese medicine, Xu Changqing is believed to have the effects of dispelling wind and dampness, relieving pain and itching. It is mainly used for rheumatism, stomach pain and distention, toothache, back pain, bruises and sprains, and skin rashes and eczema.

Xu Changqing is a perennial herb with a height of about 65 cm. The rhizome is short, with numerous fibrous roots. The stem is slender and erect, with long internodes. The leaves are opposite, lanceolate to linear, about 5-14 cm long and 2-8 mm wide;

The apex is pointed, the margin is entire and slightly reflexed, with ciliated hairs, and the base gradually tapers, with a raised midrib on the lower surface. The corymb inflorescence is terminal in the leaf axils, with multiple branches on the peduncle, and numerous flowers;

The calyx is deeply 5-lobed, obovate-lanceolate, the corolla is deeply 5-lobed, broadly ovate, flat or reflexed, yellow-green; the corolla lobes are 5, yellow, fleshy, kidney-shaped, fused with the stamens at the base;

There are 5 stamens, fused into a tubular shape, with 2 chambers; 1 pistil, the ovary is superior, composed of 2 separate carpels, the stigma is 2, fused at the tip. The fruit is obliquely angled. The seeds have numerous silvery-white hairs at the apex. The flowering period is from June to July, and the fruiting period is from September to October.
