【Characteristics of Da Wu Pao】
The stem is thick and covered with yellow hairs and short curved spines. The leaves are opposite, with a leaf stalk of 3-6cm long, covered with yellow soft hairs. The stipules are divided into strips, and the leaf blades are leathery, nearly circular, with a diameter of 5-16cm, and palmately 7-9 shallowly lobed. The lobes are often divided into 2 shallow lobes or have notches, with a round blunt or acute apex, a heart-shaped base, and irregular serrations on the edges. There are short hairs and dense small protuberances on the upper side, and yellow hairs on the lower side. The main veins are palmately 5-7, and the reticulate veins are distinct. The cone-shaped or cymose inflorescences are terminal or axillary, densely covered with yellow hairs. The bracts are elliptical, 1-1.5cm long, with torn edges. The sepals are ovate, often multi-lobed at the apex, and densely covered with yellow hairs on the outside. The petals are slightly longer than the sepals, elliptical, white, and clawed. There are many stamens and carpels, which are borne on the raised receptacle. The aggregated fruit is spherical, up to 1.5cm in diameter, and bears many red berry-like drupes.
【Usage of Da Wu Pao】
1. For treating dysentery: Take 3 liang of fresh Da Wu Pao root bark, 2 liang of fresh Long Ya Cao root, and 1 liang of fresh Bai Jin Tiao root. Decoct them in water and drink the decoction three to four times a day, with two small wine cups each time.
2. For treating cough with blood and weakness in the limbs: Take 2 liang of fresh Da Wu Pao, 1 liang of fresh Ku Ci Tou, and 5 qian of Kui Hua Gan Xin. Decoct them in water until a concentrated solution is obtained. Drink the solution four times a day, with one teacup each time.
3. For treating irregular menstruation: Take equal amounts of Da Wu Pao root, Dao Chu San root, Mao Cao root, and Jin Yin Hua vine. Decoct them in water with red sugar and drink it three times a day.
4. For treating bone fractures (without broken skin): Take equal amounts of Da Wu Pao root, wild grape root bark, and Bai Wei Shen. Grind them together, fry them with alcohol until hot, manually reset the fracture, apply the medicine, and then apply a splint. Change the dressing once a day.
