Exploring the Medicinal Properties of Chen Beimu: Recipes for Lung Health and Cough Relief

Chen Beimu is a commonly used traditional Chinese medicine, known for its effects in moisturizing the lungs, relieving cough, and reducing phlegm. In our daily life, we often use Chen Beimu to stew snow pear to treat cough caused by heat. Besides this, Chen Beimu can also be paired with other ingredients to produce different effects. Below, I will share with you a few recipes for Chen Beimu medicated food.


Medicated Food 1: Danshen Chen Beimu Stewed Chicken

Ingredients: 10g Chen Beimu, 10g Danshen, 200g chicken, 20g shiitake mushrooms, 10g cooking wine, 5g salt, 10g green onion, 5g ginger.

Directions: Wash the chicken and cut it into 4cm square pieces. Soak the shiitake mushrooms, wash them, and cut them into halves. Soak the Danshen and cut it into 3cm long segments. Gently crush the ginger, and cut the green onion into sections. Put the chicken, Danshen, Chen Beimu, shiitake mushrooms, cooking wine, salt, ginger, and green onion into a pot. Add 400ml of broth. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat for 1 hour.

Effects: Promotes blood circulation, relieves cough, and eliminates stagnation. Mainly suitable for patients with phlegm stagnation type coronary heart disease.

Medicated Food 2: Chen Beimu Congee

Ingredients: 5g Chen Beimu, 60g glutinous rice, some white sugar.

Directions: Wash the Chen Beimu, remove impurities, dry and grind it into powder. Wash the glutinous rice, put it into a pot, add an appropriate amount of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer over low heat until it becomes congee. Then add the Chen Beimu powder and white sugar, mix well, and cook for another two to three minutes.

Effects: Nourishes yin, moisturizes the lungs, transforms phlegm, and relieves cough. It has an auxiliary therapeutic effect on chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cough, and asthma.

Medicated Food 3: Pig Lung Chen Beimu Soup

Ingredients: 150g pig lung, 15g Chen Beimu, 60g white sugar, 30g lily bulbs, 30g yam, 20g coix seed.

Directions: Wash the pig lung and cut it into large pieces. Stir-fry it in a clean pot until it is dry. Then put it into a pot with other ingredients. Boil over high heat for 1 hour, then simmer over low heat for another 1.5 hours. Season with salt and serve.

Effects: Mainly used to treat tuberculous yin and yang deficiency type, manifested as coughing up blood, bone steaming, night sweats, spermatorrhea, weak physique, shortness of breath and spontaneous sweating, facial swelling and limb edema, decreased appetite, loose stools, red tongue, little saliva, or pale tongue and fat body with tooth marks, weak and thin pulse.

Medicated Food 4: Chen Beimu Deer Antler Pear Juice

Ingredients: 10g deer antler blood powder, 1 snow pear, 10g Chen Beimu, 50g rock sugar.

Directions: Peel and slice the pear. Put it into a clay pot with deer antler blood powder and Chen Beimu. Add an appropriate amount of water. Stew over low heat until cooked. Then add rock sugar, stir well, and drink the juice while eating the pear. Drink it three times a day.

Effects: Relieves cough, transforms phlegm, clears the lungs, and calms the mind.
