Gansui Banxia Tang, the name of a traditional Chinese herbal formula. Gansui Banxia Tang is used to treat retention of phlegm and qi, manifested by a feeling of fullness in the chest and abdomen, with a desire to defecate which provides temporary relief, but the feeling of fullness persists.

【Ingredients】

Gansui 3g; Banxia 9g (boiled in 200ml water, reduced to 100ml, strained); Shaoyao 15g; Gancao 6g (processed)

【Indications】

Treats retention of phlegm and qi, manifested by a feeling of fullness in the chest and abdomen, with a desire to defecate which provides temporary relief, but the feeling of fullness persists.

【Dosage】

Take the above ingredients, boil in 600ml water, reduce to 200ml, and strain. Mix the strained liquid with 100ml honey and decoct to obtain 200ml, then take it at once.

【Contraindications】

This formula should be used with caution in patients with weak spleen and stomach.

【Modern Research】

Clinical reports have shown that Gansui Banxia Tang is also effective in treating various conditions such as gastritis, colitis, tuberculous enteritis, kidney hydrops, glomerulonephritis, acute renal failure, spermatorrhea, postoperative urinary retention, pertussis in children, unidentified swelling and toxicity, malaria, etc.

Gansui and Gancao, two of the ingredients in this formula, belong to the category of "eighteen antagonisms" in traditional Chinese medicine, with the liver being the main target organ for their opposing toxic effects.

Modern pharmacological studies have confirmed that the toxicity of Gansui and Gancao in combination depends on the ratio of their dosages. If the dosage of Gancao is equal to or less than that of Gansui, there is no opposing effect and sometimes it can even alleviate the side effects of Gansui. However, if the dosage of Gancao is greater than that of Gansui, there will be opposing effects.
