The Resilient and Mysterious Yasong Herb: Unveiling its Original Form

February 2, 2024

The Chinese herb "Yasong" has well-developed root systems and is very resilient. It can promote wound healing, but Yasong is generally difficult to cultivate. Do you understand the original form of Yasong?

  [Can Yasong be grafted?]

I can only describe the idea of grafting Yasong in four words: pure nonsense. Currently, the only pine species that can be grafted is the Luohan pine. Grafting is simply a way to entertain oneself.

If you want to successfully grow Yasong, you must first choose Yasong with intact root systems and plenty of fine red roots. Avoid choosing Yasong with reversed roots, aerial roots, or large areas of broken roots, especially those connected to the waterline. Only Yasong with good root systems can be more efficiently grown.

In short, even if the shape of Yasong is good, do not buy Yasong with poor roots, as it will most likely become firewood. Do not have any illusions. Also, be sure to determine the time for digging out the tree, and avoid delays as much as possible to prevent severe dehydration of Yasong.

  [The original form of Yasong]

It is an annual herb, 5-30cm tall. The whole plant is hairless. The roots are fibrous. The stems are solitary or clustered, branched or unbranched, with ridges, and often produce adventitious roots at the nodes. The leaves are whorled, with 3-6 leaflets, sessile or with a few petioles; they are elongated spatulate or narrowly lanceolate, 8-20mm long, 2-7mm wide, with slightly obtuse or acute apices, gradually narrowing at the base, and with entire margins.

The inflorescence is conical or umbel-like, with long branches, sparse flowers, and thin petals, 3-8mm long. The sepals are 5, narrowly triangular to lanceolate, 2-1.5mm long, with slightly acute apices. The petals are 5, white, lanceolate-ovate, 2-3mm long, with acute apices and separate bases. There are 10 stamens in two whorls, shorter than the petals.

The scales are 5, broadly spatulate, with notches at the apices. The carpels are 5, ellipsoid, fused at the lower part, with slight dorsal protuberances. The fruit is a bur, with the upper half spreading obliquely when mature. The seeds are ovoid, brown, smooth, and 0.4mm long. The flowering period is from May to July, and the fruiting period is from August to September.
